“How’s the yoga going?” Dave asked, having watched her practice in the garden.

“Good. I like it.”

“You go to that retreat, don’t you?” he added.

Kelly’s heart dropped as Johnny suddenly looked up. “What retreat?”

“The one down the back road over Forsham way,” Dave volunteered, not realising this was the first Johnny had heard of it.

“I hadn’t told you because I didn’t think you’d be interested,” she lied.

“Since when do you keep things to yourself? Of course, I’m interested.”

Dave stood up, aware that he had caused a little trouble. “Sorry, I didn’t realise it was a secret. I’m gonna get showered and burn these clothes. Get the stink of pig off me.”

Pete stood too. “Yeah, thanks for the coffee, I’ve got some stuff I need to be doing.”

That left her and Johnny looking at one another. “Tell me about this retreat?” he said as the door closed.

“There is nothing to tell, really. I came across it one day and liked what I saw. I go a couple times a week. The rest of the time I practise in the garden. I just need something for myself, Johnny.”

“You don’t need anything more than what I provide for you.”

She sighed. “I know, generally, it is enough, but I want to stay healthy and looking good for you. It’s important to me too.”

“I don’t like you keeping anything from me. I like to know exactly what goes on in my organisation. You know that. It’s the only way I can control everything.”

“It’s not part of your organisation. It’s just something I like to do.”

“You are part of it. You play an integral part of it. I’m the one who says what’s good for you, K, not you. So, tell me more about this retreat and let me decide.”

Is theirs a match made in heaven…or hell?
Nick Channing, drummer for Fully Automatic, has never taken relationships
seriously. He’s had fun and met dozens of women—mostly one-night
stands—and he prefers it that way. From his parents to his friends,
he’s witnessed love and relationships firsthand and believes women
are nothing but a headache.
Nick, Brad, and Val team up again to launch her new band Val Hella. There’s
one problem, though: they still need a bassist. They audition dozens
of women, trying to find the perfect one and settle on Sabrina, known
onstage simply as Sinna, a bad ass metal head who’s perfect for the
band: pierced, tattooed, dressed in black from head to toe, and she
handles her bass with precision. She is a force to be reckoned with
and Nick is smitten.
When Nick gets her alone the first time to lay on the charm, he’s met
with a coolness he’s never experienced. Sabrina is mysterious and
thoroughly unimpressed with Nick and his behavior, and that’s when
he decides he has to have her. As he falls headlong for her, he
discovers her secrets, one dark shadow at a time. He thinks she loves
him back, but he can’t be sure. By the time he’s completely down
the rabbit hole, his heart’s so entangled, he fears he might not be
able to save himself. Can she save him or will she wreck him for all
time?

The FINAL book in the Bullet series.
Is it too much to believe that someone keeps returning to your life
because it’s meant to be?
Zane Carson is an idealistic young man with one big skeleton in his closet
when he first meets Jennifer Manders in college. They date only to
break up soon after. The sexual attraction is like an electromagnet
but they fight like alley cats. The relationship just isn’t worth
it.
Zane’s band Fully Automatic breaks big about the same time Jennifer finishes
college. One summer afternoon, they meet for coffee and sparks fly
once more. It’s off again, on again, but they just can’t make it
work and break it off for good, deciding it’s not worth the effort.
But Zane is drawn to her and, during a break in the music action, he
tracks her down again, willing to change himself for her and needing
to give her one last try. The attraction is as strong as ever, but
now Jennifer is hiding something from Zane—something big, something
that threatens to extinguish the spark for good. When Zane discovers
her secret, will he be able to forgive her or will that be the end?

For years, Jade C. Jamison tried really hard to write what she thought
was more “literary” fiction, but she found herself
compelled to write what you read by her today–sometimes gritty, raw,
realistic stories and other times humorous, light tales–but most of
the stories she writes revolve around relationships and characters
finding their way through life. While she doesn’t confine herself to
just one genre, nor is there a nice neat label for what she writes,
most of her work could be called erotic romance. Her main writing
passions include rock star romance, romantic comedy, and romantic
suspense.
She lives in Colorado with her husband and four children.

Growing up and getting trapped in adult life is something that most people
eventually face, but while reading The Fairytale Chicago of Francesca
Finnegan, a charming and magical book by Steve Wiley, it is almost
possible to forget about the inexorable progress of time. With a main
character who is teetering on the edge of forgetting about magic
forever, this novel is a touching and thought-provoking ride through
nostalgia, memory and the promises of youth. Wiley’s sharp,
tongue-in-cheek style of writing makes the pages fly and the Chicago
skyline makes a stunning backdrop for this mystical romp.
In Chicago, a secret L train runs through the mythical East Side of the
city. On that train, you’ll find a house-cat conductor, an
alcoholic elf, a queen of the last city farm, the most curious wind,
and an exceptional girl by the name of Francesca Finnegan.
When we first encounter Richard K. Lyons, he is a man who has long
forgotten the one night, when he was still a boy called Rich, when
Francesca invited him aboard the secret L for an adventure through
the East Side. The night was a mad epic, complete with
gravity-defying first kisses, mermaid overdoses, and princess
rescues. Unfortunately for Rich, the night ended like one of those
elusive dreams forgotten the moment you wake. Now, Rich is all grown
up and out of childish adventures, an adult whose life is on the
verge of ruin. It will take the rediscovery of his exploits with
Francesca, and a reacquaintance with the boy he once was, to save
him.
Half of the proceeds from this book are donated to Chicago Public Schools.

“Yep, this is exactly where I thought I’d be at this point in my life,” Jack sighed, pulling on yet another pair of latex gloves as he stared forlornly at the reeking dumpster. “Ass-deep in garbage.”

“We lead a charming life,” Kamala agreed. “At least the manager was kind enough to let us do this without a fight. Technically, we’re supposed to wait for the police.”

“Not enough time on the clock for that. We’ll work out the details later.” Jack cleared his throat and cast her a sidelong glance, smirking.

“Ladies first?”

Kamala sent him a glare that could curdle milk. His smirk widened into a grin before he tossed both large black lids back and heaved himself up over the side. He landed and wobbled for a moment before shuddering as the stench of rotten food swallowed him whole. He breathed through his mouth in shallow bursts, his eyes tearing, and managed to keep his breakfast down after a moment.

“Yep,” he said weakly, offering Kamala his arm. “Charming, indeed.”

She climbed in next to him and they carefully rooted through the trash, checking for any bits of electronics in case the laptop had been disassembled before being tossed. “What are the odds that we’ll find it in this mess?”

“We probably have a better chance of growing wings and flying around the city,” Jack said, grimacing as he tossed a half-filled macchiato aside. “But the devil’s in the details. There is no perfect crime. If Okegawa was on a deadline, he might have been in a rush. Being in a rush means making mistakes. That’s all we need. Just one mistake to catch him.”

They searched for the better part of half an hour before Kamala heard a suspicious crunching sound beneath her covered boots. She shifted a few things aside and found a long white cord. She tugged sharply on it and the battery charger for a MacBook laptop popped free, swinging in her hand. She met Jack’s gaze and they both tore through the trash surrounding that spot. A moment later, Kamala’s hands closed on Jack’s laptop.

“Hello, beautiful,” Jack said, wiping grime and gunk off of it. “Leave it closed. I’m sure the garbage probably did a number on any evidence on the outside, but there might be fibers or hairs between the keyboard and the screen. Nice work, Dr. Anjali.”

She flashed him a grin, handed it to him, and turned to exit the dumpster. She stopped after only a step. Jack realized why a second later.

Konnichiwa,” Okegawa said pleasantly, his smile off-setting the silenced Beretta .9mm in his large hand. “Ogenki desu ka?

“We’ve been better,” Kamala said, slowly raising her hands.  Jack did the same, but he inched towards her in an attempt to block Okegawa’s line of sight.

“Relax, Jackson,” Okegawa drawled, his tone almost bored. “I have no intention of hurting ojō-sama.”

“Well, you tossed my apartment and now you have a gun pointed at us,” Jack said. “You understand my concern.”

“Of course. The gun is merely insurance. If I wanted you dead, I could have had it done already. I think you know that, as smart as you are.”

Jack narrowed his eyes. “Then what do you want?”

“A distraction. That’s why I left the laptop for you to find. It gave me time to break into your car and take the other laptop. I’ve been trying to get it for days, but ojō-sama takes it with her everywhere, unlike you.”

Kamala clenched her jaw. “How long have you been following us?”

Okegawa shrugged. “Not long. Had to get everything prepped and tie up loose ends.”

“Is that what we are now? Loose ends? It’s broad daylight, man. You can’t just shoot us and walk away. Hell, you’ve probably only got another thirty seconds before one of the Starbucks employees empties the trash and sees you.”

Hai. That’s why you’re going to toss me the laptop.”

“Or you’ll shoot me?”

What little light there was in Okegawa’s brown eyes sputtered out. “Hai.”

“You just said you didn’t want me dead.”

Another dispassionate shrug. “I’d prefer not to, but if you push me, I will retaliate.”

“Jack,” Kamala whispered.

He glanced at her. She kept her eyes on Okegawa, but her tone was enough. He exhaled and tossed Okegawa the laptop. It landed at his feet, shattering several pieces over the concrete with a loud crash. Okegawa flinched on instinct, his eyes snapping towards it for a split second.

Kamala took her Taser out of her pocket and shot it at Okegawa.

Okegawa screamed as the electrified prongs hit him. Jack pulled Kamala down into the dumpster as the gun went off twice, tearing two chunks out of the wall where he’d been standing. They both lay panting in the garbage heap as they heard a thud and then nothing. Jack motioned for her to stay put and slowly rose to his knees, peeking over the rim of the dumpster.

Okegawa lay on the ground, twitching occasionally, his eyes shut, teeth clenched, the gun lying several feet away.

Jack scooped Kamala up in his hands with a hysterical laugh, holding her above his head. “You. Are. Freaking. Brilliant.”

Excerpt:

When Carrie
opened the door and stepped inside, sunlight streamed in through the dirty
windows. Even though the barn had been vacant for years, the air smelled of hay
and horses.
Looking to her
left, she saw a man shaving. He’d glanced up when Carrie opened the doors, but
returned his gaze to the small mirror tacked to the wooden beam. He was bare
from the waist up. His chest was lean and muscular, with dark brown hair from
mid-chest to his waistline. His arms were powerfully built, and his right hand
was steady as he scraped the white soap from his angular jaw with a razor. His
dark blue uniform pants with gold braid down the side were tucked into
knee-high black leather boots. He stood at least six feet tall, and though
Carrie hadn’t made her living in the carnival, she guessed he was probably
younger than her, likely in his mid to late twenties. He peered at the small
mirror, tilting his chin to swipe away the shaving soap. Carrie waited to speak
until after he’d finished with the ivory-handled straight blade and dipped it
into the basin of soapy water.
“Good morning,”
she said.
His expression
was an equal mix of surprise and annoyance. He dropped the razor and grabbed
his shirt off a nearby nail. He turned his back to Carrie and pulled it on.
“You can see me,
madam?” he asked, buttoning his shirt and stuffing it into his pants.
“Yes. Can you
see me?”
“I can, but I
believe I have the advantage. I’m dead. You are not.” He turned and glared at
her. His eyebrows furrowed as though he wasn’t quite sure how they’d arrived at
the point of introductions.
“I’m sorry to
intrude. I’m Carrie. Carrie Hansen.” She extended her hand.
He reached to
shake her hand, but his fingers passed through hers. They both jerked back.
“I’m sorry. I
really didn’t mean to intrude,” she said.
“You surprised
me. That’s all. We seldom receive visitors, especially living ones who can see
us.” He put on his blue uniform coat and fastened the long row of brass
buttons. “I’m Major Thomas Gentry, at your service.” He bowed.
“I’m sorry I
startled you. I sometimes forget ghosts aren’t accustomed to being seen.”
His eyes
narrowed and he frowned. “How may I be of service to you, Miss Hansen?”
“Where can I
find Colonel Stratton? I need to speak with him.”
His dark blue
eyes showed his increasing puzzlement. “The living do not go looking for
Colonel Stratton. What business have you with him?”
“I bought this
house, and I intend to live here.”
“You bought
Stratton House?”
“And I need to
speak with the colonel.”
Major Gentry
shook his head as though to sort through the details. “Please forgive me. You
bought Stratton House, you intend to live here, and you wish to speak with the
home’s proprietor, Colonel Stratton?”
“I thought we’d
covered that,” she said. “You don’t get many visitors, do you?”

Ted edged in closer. “You can take a few moments for one dance.” He eyed Tessa. “You don’t mind if I borrow your sister, do you?”

But I do.”

The deep, masculine voice sent an arousing jolt right into Emersyn’s core. And damn it to hell, her mouth went dry, making it impossible to swallow. She fingered her straw then took a deep drink. This time she welcomed the burning chill against her lungs. Detective Alec Pearce had a knack for showing up at her worst moments. Why the hell was he here?

Ted moved away from her as if he’d been burned. “Alec, good to see you.”

You do know you’re hitting on my partner’s daughter, right, Ted?”

Just asking her for a dance.”

Emersyn glanced between the two; she actually preferred Ted’s company to the man who seemed to go out of his way to make her crazy.

Alec reached for her hand and set it in his palm. “Actually, she promised this dance to me. They’re playing our song.”

The muscles in her body tensed as her fingernails dug into his skin. “I don’t—”

Music is on, Em. Shall we?” His other hand went around her waist, and he gave her a swift yank.

Jerkball, let go,” she hissed in his ear.

His grip tightened. “It’s just one dance. Play nice.”

Alec escorted Emersyn to the small dance floor near the bandstand. Every instinct in her wanted to slap his arrogant expression right into next week, but that would make a scene. It was what half the bar expected the instant he got within striking distance. They were all waiting for her to let loose. But this was a new day, a new diploma, new job, new Emersyn. Emotions in check.

My name is Emersyn. I would think you would remember something so simple.”

Alec’s face lit with a grin as his arms brought her close and their bodies began to move to the music. She shot a glare at Tessa, pleading for her to do something. Instead, her sister, the traitor, took another sip of Emersyn’s drink, lifted it in a toast, and rotated in her seat.

A chuckle came from deep in Alec’s throat. “Tessa likes me. You can thank me now.”

I can also knee you where the sun doesn’t shine.”

He lifted her chin with his thumb. “Now that wasn’t nice. I sacrificed a night with that blonde”—he nodded to a beautiful woman sitting at the end of the bar—“just to keep Lecher Ted from hitting on you … again.”

What makes you think I needed rescuing?”

Oh please, Tessa, make the creep go away. I’m ever so sweet and don’t want to hurt the poor jerk’s feelings.”

She yanked out of Alec’s hold, but he was ready and moved her back into his arms without missing a beat.

Relax. I’m teasing.”

You are such an ass.”

His lips brushed over her ear. “Enjoy our moment, Em.”

Impossible. They had more layers of misunderstanding between them than her mother’s chocolate cake, heated words that couldn’t be unheard and arguments with no closure.

After her father had mentioned at dinner that Alec was joining them for dessert, she’d jumped at Tessa’s offer to buy her a drink at the tavern. It was the perfect place to hide out. A lone wolf like Alec wouldn’t be caught dead in the crowded, noisy bar. But here he was. She’d run but not far enough.

I’m sorry I missed your graduation ceremony, but I have a little something for you,” he whispered.

You didn’t need to do that.”

I’m proud of you.”

The words sounded so genuine. “Dad seems resigned to the idea of me at least working alongside cops, if not as a cop.”

Joe doesn’t want you anywhere near the job. But you found a way around that. Instead of crawling in the gutter looking for the worst mankind has to offer, you’re picking through what they left behind.”

She halted in the middle of the dance floor. “You think that’s why I became a forensic scientist?”

I didn’t mean it like that.”

Then what did you mean?”

The music stopped, and they stood still, glaring at each other. Our thing. “I can’t do this tonight,” she said, dropping her hand to her sides. “Thanks.”

For?”

Saving me from another go-around with Ted.”

Do you want me to talk to him?”

I can take care of myself.”

For once, there was no comeback. Instead, he eased her against him and tucked her hand over his heart. “Dance with me, Emersyn.”

That sexy, got-to-have-you-now voice was back, and her other four senses came out to play. Being close to Alec Pearce, taking in his spicy, clean soap scent, feeling the strength of his arms around her wasn’t an awful feeling. Confusing? Hell yes, but her body sure enjoyed it. It’s just a dance, right?

She lowered one hand to his hip and brought the other around his neck, her cheek resting against his. Alec tightened his grip around her waist as he spun them around the dance floor. The move put their bodies in sync, and there was no mistaking the effect she had on him. Her lips brushed against his skin, sending shock waves through her.

He sucked in a breath and tilted his head. Their gazes held for what seemed like an eternity. He was so damn gorgeous, his deep brown eyes with a hint of gold, lush lashes, and a dusting of five-o’clock shadow on his square jaw that she ached to feel rubbed against all her soft places. As if he read her mind, his mouth caressed her bottom lip. He waited, expecting her to pull back. Need took over, and she lost her mind.
