Exit Signs
by Patrice Locke
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Researcher Tracy Price is trying to find a dead writer and forget a live
musician.
Rock star Jesse Elliot is sure Tracy is demented, and she believes he
wouldn’t recognize the truth in a lineup of Bibles. Their only hope
is to stop trying to read each other’s minds and start speaking
their own.
Anyone who has ever had a crush, felt betrayed, or been forgiven will
appreciate Tracy’s struggle to claim the life she never knew she
wanted.

Jesse raked some strands of his blue-black hair away from his forehead. The hair fell right back onto the shoreline of his face like a wave on a beach. I thought of the cliché movie scene where the action cuts to an agitated ocean to symbolize sex. I cleared my throat, and ordered myself to get a grip.

Instead, I surprised us both by asking him my name. “Tracy Price?”

Yes.” He confirmed my identity. “It’s nice to meet you.”

He was all-business; I was all over the place.

This was how a romance novel would begin, and, as the designated hero, he was free to relax and be two-dimensional for now. I’d provide the script because I thought I knew the genre, but I had it wrong from the start because, on second thought, he was from another planet. He had to be. And if this was science fiction, anything could happen. Aliens are tricky.

When he sat next to me I wanted to leap up and run away. Instead, I asked, “How do you like Albuquerque?Very original, Tracy. What I wondered was, How does it feel to look like you do?

I like it,” he said, answering both my questions. “I like it so far.”

I felt a surge of power. “I bet. And how long are you staying?” Or, more to the point, would it be too forward of me to sit on your lap?

I can’t say yet. Maybe six weeks? This was kind of an unexpected trip.” Bingo. Both questions addressed.

This was working. Let me know when you decide about the lap thing. I covered my mouth for a fake cough to clear my head.

We were silent. I was contemplating his perfection. Maybe he was, too.

As a journalist, Patrice Locke wrote a lot of stories with unhappy and
even tragic endings.
Facts are facts, and a writer doesn’t mess with facts.
But fiction is another world. Patrice began writing novels, where she can
control the endings and make them as happy as she wants. The best
thing about fiction, she says, is having time to think before her
characters speak, so they can say the things most of us only come up
with after the perfect moment has passed.
She loves to write, read, and watch romantic comedies where life always
turns out the way it should. Her only obsessive relationships are
with semicolons and Oxford commas.
Though she doesn’t like to brag, Patrice is an award-winning artist. She won
a gold and diamond watch when she was 13 for decorating a turkey
drumstick bone to look like Batman. Alas, that was her last
recognition in the fine arts.
Patrice lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, not far from her daughter Kaitlin,
eight hours from her son Trevor, and way too many miles from amazing
grandsons Alexander and Zackary.

Legion Series by K.C. Finn – Book Tour + #Giveaway

14/02/17

Legion Lost
By K.C. Finn
Genre: Dystopian
#
One Underground girl escapes from a soldiers’ raid. Lost and above
ground for the very first time, she has only one option to secure her
survival: the Legion—a government organization for teenagers with
no place left to run. Leave your identity at the gate, and join a
life of military service until you reach adulthood. It sounds ideal,
but the Underground girl knows that the System won’t stop looking
for its female runaway. So, she tells a lie about her gender.
And it will change her forever.
Posing as Raja, a boy-soldier, the Underground girl is thrown into Legion
life at its full, brutal speed. Here, she meets Senior Commander
Briggs, whose savage authority reigns over the teenage soldiers.
Amongst them are a band of oddballs known as the South Tower Rejects,
led by Stirling, a tall, savvy stranger with bright copper hair and
eyes that shine like oceans. There’s something hiding behind his
cocky smile, and Raja wants to know what it is.
lg-excerpt

“Little boy, if you think I’m not going to notice how incompetent you are, just because you’re next to her, then think again.”

He thinks I’m cowardly now too—a very promising sign. When the commander runs through the process of how to load our automatic guns, I ask him to stop and repeat even the simplest parts of the instructions. I can see the strain in his steely eyes, like he’s resisting the urge to just get up and smack me for interrupting him. On the outside, the others are still looking at me like I’m defective in some way, but, on the inside, I’m starting to enjoy winding Briggs up by playing the fool.

We have limited time to practise setting up the guns in our pairs. The bruised girl is surprisingly good at locking the pieces into the right places, and I learn more from watching her than I did from Briggs’s brisk display.

“What’s your name?” I ask her, once I’m sure the commander is busy helping someone else.

“Lucrece,” she replies.

I am taken aback by the broken quality to her voice. She sounds as though someone has forced her to gargle with glass.

“I’m Raja,” I tell her, and she lets that little smile slip out again.

“You’re all right, Raja,” Lucrece says. “The first friendly-looking face I’ve seen around here. Pity friendly isn’t in Briggs’s assessment criteria.”

Lucrece is a remarkably intelligent girl. Though her hands shake with nerves, she understands the mechanics of the gun far better than I do, and she explains the principles of distance, perception, and air resistance with confidence. From her, I learn that the guns have two settings: single shot and continuous fire. She finds the switch to change between the modes with ease. It pleases me to know that she has so much skill, but a little part of me is sad when I realise that she won’t be coming to the South Tower with me after all. Once today is over, we might never speak to one another again.

“Time’s up,” Briggs snarls. “You, you, and you, with me up here.”

Lucrece is one of the three people that Briggs’s pointing finger finds. She hands me her gun and stumbles nervously to the commander’s side with the two tall boys the commander has picked. Briggs uncovers something huge and lumpy from beside the gun stores, throwing it at Lucrece. She misses the catch as the heavy object thumps her hard in the chest, but when she manages to lift it again, the object takes shape. It is a thick, padded jacket, which appears to be full of small, frayed holes.

“Put these on,” Briggs barks, handing a jacket to each of the boys too, “and go and stand in front of the targets.”

He can’t be doing what I think he’s doing, and yet I watch in horror as Lucrece pads up and walks a few metres away. She heads toward the spiral-shaped targets that I’d assumed we would be aiming at. Briggs gives the three teens a shout when he’s satisfied with their distance, then turns back to us with a self-satisfied smirk.

“Set your weapons to fire single shots,” he instructs. “Let’s make some holes in those dummies, recruits.”

They aren’t dummies. They’re people. Real people. My fellow soldiers are adjusting their guns, but I can’t stand to even touch mine now.

“What if we miss, sir?” I interject. “We could kill them.”

Briggs leans close to my face, his bared teeth glowing white against his dark lips.

“You’d better not miss then, had you son?” he purrs.

The heart-wrenching sequel to Kindle Press’s LEGION LOST has arrived. As
our heroine Raja suffers with intense grief, her new identity as a
Highland rebel soldier is about to be put to the test. As part of an
intrepid rescue mission, she and her fellow Highlanders will travel
south to infiltrate the System itself, discovering the fresh horrors
that Governor Prudell has subjected her people to. Death, destruction
and all-out war awaits, and nothing can prepare them for the terror
of the truth.

“Whoa,” says a voice near the doorway to the chamber.

It takes me a moment to break the glare that Sun and I are sharing, but the sight of Goddie and Apryl is a welcome relief when I spot them entering the room. Apryl has a small bag of provisions which she hands me, and I sling it over my shoulder as my gaze rests on Goddie. He’s looking me over, his mouth open a little.

“I know. Don’t say it,” I tell him. “I look ridiculous.”

“No,” Goddie says gently. “I mean… ya don’t look like you, dat’s for sure. But ya look… good. Okay.”

“Wow,” Apryl adds dryly. “That was charming. You’re just full of backhanded compliments today.”

“I,” Goddie begins at once, wincing at me apologetically. “No, I don’t mean dat, I mean… Oh hell, ya know what I mean, right?”

“Seldom if ever,” I tell him.

But really, I do know. I must look different, so radically different from normal. And yet this is how I was supposed to turn out, I presume. Mumma’s little girl. Long hair and dresses. Pretty as a picture.

“So long as it gets me in and out unnoticed,” I add quickly, feeling the redness in my cheeks. “As soon as we know where Dad is, we can make a move.”

“Kip’s waiting for you on the surface,” Apryl tells me with a nod. “He’s going to tail you both back to the walls in case there’s any trouble. But I want you to take this.”

She reaches into her pocket, then forces something small and cold into my hand. It’s a brooch, apparently made of gold, and it has a black stone set in the centre that glistens a little strangely. The circular piece of jewellery has a pin on the back for it to be secured on clothing. When I don’t do anything with the brooch except stare at it, Apryl huffs and then takes it back. I watch her pinning it to one side of my dress, a little to the right of my heart.

“What’s that?” Sun asks sharply, eyeing the brooch.

“A camera,” Apryl explains. “Delilah and I rigged it up back at the base. Direct feed back to our computers and tablets here.”

“We’ll see everything you do,” Delilah adds.

When I glance towards her, I realise she’s looking directly at Sun Lin. Sun, for her part, seems to pale a little at the eyes on her, but soon she shrugs the comment off in that haughty way of hers.

“Enjoy the show,” she says with a curling smile.

Excerpt:

Cleopatra was utterly trapped. She longed to close her eyes and block him out, but fear of the unknown kept them wide open. The man had no weapon, couldn’t possibly mean to harm her. Except, would he really need a weapon? She couldn’t fight him, wouldn’t even know where to begin.
He studied her closely, and when his head tilted slightly, she noticed every bit of his focus fixated on her neck. Not a murderer. He wanted to mark her, to bite her neck, leave the wound to heal and forever bind her to him. This was why daughters of the aristocracy were kept under a tight watch. The mark, unbreakable and indisputable, would give this man access to her family’s wealth and prestige, and bind her to him until death.
He reached for her, head descending to her neck. Cleopatra quickly covered his target with both hands. Tears gathered in her eyes, sorrow distorted her voice. “I don’t want this. Please, don’t hurt me.”
The man rocked back as if she’d smacked him, and for the first time since he’d appeared, he looked at her face. His eyes met hers and didn’t look away as he brought his hand to her cheek and brushed away a tear. He saw her, truly saw her, and the adoration in his eyes sent a completely different shimmy down her spine.
In one step, he crowded her, pressing his cheek against hers. “Could never hurt you. My angel,” his captivating voice crooned, so close to her ear. He drew in a deep breath, his face buried in her hair. Then he whispered, “My Cleo.”
She gasped. The shortened version of her name on his lips sounded strangely intimate, as though he’d known her for years. The warmth rolling off his body kept her intensely aware of his close proximity, and she held her breath, waiting for his next move to prove his intent. He didn’t bite her, didn’t hurt her, and the sincere affection in his gentle touch left her so very confused. Any other man would have bitten her, taken advantage of the opportunity laid before him. But this man? His intent to bite her had been unmistakable, and he’d stopped because he…cared for her? She didn’t understand.
His hand slipped from her face, dropped to his side, and he staggered back, moving as if through a dream. He still watched her, but he swayed, that intense focus suddenly gone. The man crumpled to the floor with a heavy thud.
Dragging in a long, shaky breath, she blinked away tears she’d been staring through. A few more deep breaths, and she allowed herself to really look at him. He lay on his side, knees slightly curled, motionless. Something was wrong with him. People didn’t just fall over.
Gripping the railing, which had swiftly become her personal anchor, she pointed her foot and gingerly nudged his arm. When he didn’t move, she put more force behind the kick. Cleopatra jumped as his hand fell away from his ribs, thumping onto the floor. Blood coated his fingers.
He was bleeding? She’d missed the injury completely. The saturated, glistening spot had been hidden under his hand and camouflaged by his black button-up shirt. He’d been so close and she hadn’t… She glanced down at herself. Blood streaked across her pale blue gown, more evidence of his severe injury.
The elevator doors slid open. Oh God, if someone were to see them together in this state, what would they think? What would happen to her, or to him? Her heart hammered, panic flooding through her as she peeked out into the main corridor of Sterling.
The white, gold-trimmed corridor stretched on, empty. The elevator doors slid shut, and there it would stay, unless called. She might not have much time. Peering down at the unconscious man, she tried to fit the puzzle pieces together.
She’d mistaken his intent. He’d needed sustenance badly, and now he bled out, dying at her feet. Because of who she was, he refused to harm her, to take from her. How did he have the willpower to block his instincts from taking over, to stop from feeding?
Whoever he was, she had to save him. She dropped to her knees and pushed away any lingering fear under her newfound resolve. Tugging his shirt from his dark jeans, she searched for the injury. In the midst of his blood-slicked skin, the wound gaped open between his ribs. It looked like he’d been slashed, the nasty gash a result of being on the wrong end of a knife. Just a guess. She had no experience with this sort of villainy.
Her hand flew to her mouth. The murderer running loose in Galbraith used a knife. Could this man be yet another victim?
“Can you hear me? What happened to you? Who did this?” She awkwardly patted his whiskered cheek. His eyes fluttered open, then shut again.
“Balinese is safe.” His voice trembled, his words slurred without support from his shallow breath. “Paris. Demons.”
Cleopatra’s fingers fumbled as she pulled away his shirt collar. Several teeth-like gouges in his shredded skin oozed blood near his collarbone. Demons. They’d almost made a meal of him, and he was a bloody mess, but the real danger came from that knife wound. It looked deep, and if he’d been damaged internally and lost too much blood, he might not survive.
He needed blood now. She bit her wrist and pressed it against his mouth. His lips didn’t part, and his body refused to respond. A rivulet of blood slid down his cheek. He’d die if she didn’t fight for him.

Excerpt:

CHAPTER 1
Scalding hot
water traced the scars along my back as I placed my hands against the stone
shower wall. As a warrior angel, I have survived several years of battle, but
not unscathed. I have many battle wounds—most of which reside on my back and
arms. Wounds from human weapons we tend to heal without a problem; wounds by
the weapons of angels and demons are not so forgiving.
After weeks of
searching for him, last night I finally caught up with the demon I had been
hunting. He put up a ferocious fight and my muscles were still aching despite
the heat of the shower but I would be getting briefed on my next case soon so
reluctantly I reached out and turned off the faucet.
Just before I
stepped out of the shower, I froze. The air changed, and I knew that I was no
longer alone. Don’t ask me how I knew because I couldn’t tell you. Not really.
There was no pop, or bells; no flash of light, breezes, or anything like that.
It was as if there was just the slightest shift in the air. I braced for
attack, reached my right hand behind my back, and unsheathed a sword that
wasn’t there a moment before. My heavenly relics—my weapons—are always there
when I need them and never when I don’t. Where they go when I am unarmed, I
have no idea. All that matters to me is that they are there when I reach for
them.
With my left
foot, I kicked open the glass door and stepped out into the empty bathroom,
dripping wet. Utterly naked but for my sword. I peeked around the door and
slowly entered my bedroom.
“What do you
want?” I said to the empty room, making my voice as calm as possible.
“Relax, Beauty,
I’m completely unarmed,” said a humored voice without a face. “You’re looking
just as scrumptious as the last time we faced each other.”
A dark-haired
figure walked in, full of ease, and leaned against my bedroom door, crossing
his feet. He had an apple from my dining-room table in his hand. I spun my
sword, placing the tip of it into his throat the moment he walked through the
door. He brought the apple to his mouth, rubbed it against his shirt, and took
a big bite, looking as though he didn’t have a care in the world.
It was Colton.
My heart leapt in my chest. It had been a few years since I’d last seen
him.

Just as beautiful as he was the day he walked away .
. . Except that now he was a demon, of course.
