A small town in the Deep South isn’t where most gay men would choose to go
looking for love. But open hearts will find a way . . .
Growing up in the Bible Belt, Paul Dunham learned from a young age to hide his
sexuality. Now he’s teaching psychology at a conservative college
in Georgia—and still hiding who he really is. If Paul hopes to get
tenure, he needs to keep his desires on the down-low. But when an old
college crush shows up on campus—looking more gorgeous than
ever—Paul’s long-suppressed urges are just too big for one little
closet to hold . . .
Brandon Mercer has come a long way since his freshman year fumblings with
Paul. Now he’s confident, accomplished, proudly out—and the
sexiest IT consultant Paul’s ever seen. When Brandon asks Paul to
grab some coffee and catch up, it leads to a steamy reunion that puts
their first night of passion to shame. But when Paul’s longtime
crush turns into a full-time romance, he receives an anonymous email
threatening to expose their secret to the world. If Paul stays with
Brandon, his teaching career is over. Yet if he caves under pressure,
he risks losing the one true love he’s been waiting for. . .

UNDER THE PARISIAN SKY
by Alli Sinclair
Genre: Women’s Fiction
Pub Date: 7/25/2017
In the City of Light, one dancer must confront her fears about love and
loss before she can step into a brighter future…
Lily Johannson has returned to Paris, the city that broke her heart and destroyed her
ballet career, with two goals in mind: to overcome the grief
surrounding her fiancé’s death, and to make amends with her
estranged sister, Natalie, also a ballerina. But when Lily meets
charming composer Yves Rousseau, he is convinced she has a third
mission—as his muse…
Struggling to finish a score about an infamous Ballets Russes dancer from 1917,
Yves believes Lily is meant to help him. Despite her resistance, she
is swept once more into the exhilarating arms of the dance—and into
Yves’ passionate embrace. But when her sister is cast as the
infamous dancer and begins to imitate her tragic life, she soon goes
missing. Now Lily and Yves must set out to find her—and along the
way face their own demons, while also discovering that art, like
love, should not be abandoned so easily…
Alli Sinclair is a multi award-winning author who spent her early adult
years travelling the globe, intent on becoming an Indiana Jones in
heels. She scaled mountains in Nepal, Argentina, and Peru, rafted the
Ganges, and rode a camel in the Sahara. Argentina and Peru became her
home for a few years and when she wasn’t working as a mountain or
tour guide, Alli could be found in the dance halls dancing the tango,
salsa, merengue, and samba.
All of these adventures made for fun storytelling and this is when she
discovered her love of writing. Alli’s stories capture the romance
and thrill of exploring new destinations and cultures that also take
readers on a journey of discovery.
Alli volunteers as an author role model with Books in Homes,

“Get her out of here! Now!” Gramps commanded. They didn’t hesitate and pulled my arms the opposite direction and my feet followed as I ran with them. I looked back just as we were about to turn the corner and saw Borin stand tall and push Larry back with his heavy arms. Gramps fell to the ground.
A wave flooded through me. A wave of intense violence.
“NO!” I screamed and quickly turned back, seizing my arms away from their grasps, heading back to help Gramps. I could hear Reed and Kent’s footsteps run back after me. But I didn’t care. I was not about to leave him. He was rubbing his head as Borin stood over him, about to place a hand on him.
“Don’t you touch him!” The voice that came out of my mouth was unrecognizable. I ran to him, holding out my arms to shove him away.
My body felt unfamiliar. My feet lightweight. My arms tingled as I felt a sensation rise to my shoulders, down my forearms, and out my fingertips.
Before I could even touch Borin, he flew away from Gramps’ side and slammed into a garbage receptacle a few feet away, causing a dent with his body.

“I’m sure she can handle herself.” Jovian tugged again at my arm, pulling me away from Reed’s body, but his grip staying strong.
“Uh, you guys–” I cleared my throat.
“I’m sure she can too.” Reed cut me off. They were in their own world. Their world where they were about to maul each other in front of my eyes.
“Hey! You guys need to get some food!” The tornado feel of our swirling energies started to dissipate as Dennis stepped into our circle, one hand on each of their shoulders. Their death gazes were still locked onto each other. Reed’s piercing blue eyes were waves of rage, while Jovian’s golden eyes were shining with nothing but heated ire.
I snatched my arm from Jovian’s grasp and moved my waist away from Reed’s. “Yes, Dennis, I am starving!”
“All right, come on, guys!” Dennis stepped into my place, moving me out of the way, and got in between Jovian and Reed, squeezing them tightly with his arms wrapped around their shoulders.

“We are not your enemies!” I yelled as the others came and circled around me, their bodies crouched, ready to fight anyone who came near. The humans left their guns in the air and all pulled out knives or daggers from their pockets, ready to kill us through hand-to-hand combat.
“Es, this isn’t fair, we can kill them easily, what do we do?” Dennis whispered from in front of me. With a motion of my hand, I turned the hovering guns and pointed them back at their owners. The humans’ hands lifted in surrender.
“If we were your enemies, I could kill you right now!” I took another breath. They had so much fear, yet so much strength in their eyes. I softened my voice to say, “Is this what you want?”
No one answered. An arrow came flying through the protective circle around me and near my head, but my eyes stopped it in its place, then broke it in half, dropping to the floor.
“That doesn’t mean shit! You’re an alien and we want you gone!” a deep voice yelled, one that I knew all too well. Dennis stood up straight from his crouched posture; he knew too, along with Reed. I threw the guns onto the ground, distracted, as I moved out of the circle they made and stepped forward.
I scanned the shadows, but didn’t see anything. But I could feel him. Those green eyes were planted on me. “Show your face, Kent!”

I am a Leo. Born August 10, living on the east coast. I self-published
my first novel, PNEUMA, November 2014, and it’s hasn’t stopped
since.
One of my biggest problems was having too much to read. Now my newfound
problem; having too much to write and not enough hands to type it
out. Not enough brains to put the stories together fast enough. Not
enough tea or coffee to keep me awake 24/7.
So, like every normal person, I have to take it one day at a time.
My cravings for sweets keep me going, any sort of cakes (especially red
velvet), pies, cookies, and ice cream.
I have a cat named Bongo-Bongo, who loves to get in my way when I’m
trying to work, but is too cute for me to fight him off.
And then I have my family, specifically my husband, who puts up with my
endless nights, my tapping of the keyboard, my ridiculous
imagination, and yet, he always encourages me to believe in myself
and follow my dreams.

FORBIDDEN KNIGHT

Genre: Historical Romance
Pub Date: 6/6/17

Deep within Scotland, a healer and a
warrior join forces to protect Scotland’s future . . .
There is an intruder in the woods near
King Robert Bruce’s camp, but when Sir Thomas MacKelloch comes
face-to-face with the interloper, he is shocked to discover his
assailant is a woman. The fair lady is skilled with a bow and arrow
and defiant in her responses. The wary Knight Templar dare not allow
her beauty to lower his guard. Irritated by his attraction, he hauls
her before his sovereign to expose her nefarious intent.
Outraged Sir Thomas dismissed her
claim, Mistress Alesone MacNiven awaits the shock on the arrogant
knight’s face when he learns that she has told the truth. But it is
she who is shocked, and then horrified, as it is revealed that her
father, the king’s mortal enemy, has betrothed her to a powerful
noble, a deal that could jeopardize the king’s efforts to unite
Scotland. Robert Bruce orders Sir Thomas to escort Alesone to safety.
As they embark on a harrowing journey through the Highlands, Alesone
tries to ignore her attraction to the intimidating warrior, but as
she burns beneath Thomas’s kiss she realizes this fearless knight
could steal her heart.

A frustrated exhale sounded behind Lady Alesone.

“Do you always interrogate the people you meet?” Sir Thomas asked.

Though tired, Alesone smiled.  “Only the interesting ones.”

Ice crunched beneath the horse’s hooves as his destrier picked his way through the litter of rock and snow down the incline.

At her protector’s silence, she glanced back.

In the cloud smeared moonlight his gaze held hers.

At the intensity, a shiver swept through her.  From their less than cordial start, she’d doubted they’d ever come to a point where she’d look at him more than a man to avoid.  Yet, something about Thomas drew her.

Drew her?

An understatement.  In truth, from the way his eyes held hers, his direct manner, and how he moved with predatory stealth left tingles of awareness sliding through her body.  He was unlike any man she’d ever met.

Off balance by the needs he evoked, she shifted to a safer topic.  “I want to apologize.”

“You have done naught to apologize for.”

“I have.  Although praised by our king, I doubted you.”

“Lass,” he said, fatigue weighing heavy in his voice, “your belief in me is irrelevant.  Once you are safely delivered, never will we see the other again.”

She stiffed, hurt that he could dismiss her with such ease when he lingered on her mind.  Why?  ‘Twas nae like she wanted him to stay.  Still, a foolish part of her needed to know.  “And when you ride off you will forget me?” she teased.

Thomas grunted.  “Anyone who drives an arrow paces from my heart I remember.”

The Rosinanti Dragons are no more. Since their extinction nearly one
thousand years ago these primal powerhouses have fallen into the
obscurity of history’s forgotten lore. In that time, humans have

horrifying truth: ancient evil stirs around them, waiting to reclaim
its lost world.
For Valentean Burai, animus warrior of the kingdom of Kackritta, the
details surrounding humanity’s victory over the Rosinanti are more
than just a history lesson. The long-buried mysteries of this archaic
conflict may hold the answers that he has so desperately sought
regarding his own past.
As the awful truth of the Rosinanti’s supposed demise comes to light,
Valentean must stand together with Seraphina, a magically gifted
princess, to embark upon a mission to maintain order and light
throughout Terra. Only together can these two lifelong friends face
down the resurgence of the Rosinanti legacy, and combat the greatest
threat their world has ever known.

Rosinanti: The Decimation of Casid
A Rosinanti Novella, Book 1.5

While an entire world away, men turn into dragons and ancient magic ignites
the air, Casid lived on in peaceful ignorance. This tiny village and
its people existed outside of the conflict which threatened to
swallow Terra, until the day chaos itself landed upon its shores.
Now, one lone warrior seeks to protect his family, his friends, and the
woman he loves as demons rise from the flames to burn everything he
has ever loved to ash. This man is no god, no fundamental force of
nature. He is simply a man, alone against the fury of chaos.
Casid will be decimated, consumed by the same blaze which threatens to
overtake all of Terra. But what will rise from the ashes of this once
perfect haven, forged in the fires of tragedy and loss, might become
the most fearsome opponent the darkness has ever known.

Rosinanti: Wrath of the Faithful
The Rosinanti Series Book 2

Valentean Burai and Seraphina Kackritta barely escaped the grip of chaos. Only
by working together were these two life long soul mates able to
combat the greatest threat the world of Terra has ever known.
But when they find themselves separated, with the entire world turned
against them, both princess and animus warrior must battle not only
the forces of chaos and darkness that seek to end their world, but
their own crippling doubts and fears.
Valentean must also face the horrifying truth of himself. He is one of the last
surviving members of the Rosinanti race, and holds within him
world-destroying power, and the unwanted uncontrollable ability to
transform into a fearsome dragon.
The struggle of man vs beast is not limited to the battlefield. Valentean
will wage that war internally, within the confines of his own
conflicted heart.
But, in the end, who is stronger? The man, or the dragon?

Book Description:

When you live in a world pullulating with gods, can you truly be an atheist? Well, yes…if you know a way to get rid them.

Mysantheos, a fanatic atheist at the head of a powerful lobby/terrorist organization, has created a weapon able to kill gods. All he needs is a disruptive figurehead to attract the masses. Goblin, who has just tried to supplant Queen Louhi as CEO of Gods Incorporated, has been deemed the right kind of unworthy. Mysantheos breaks him out of the Queen’s prison and the godslaughter begins.

As the divine bodies pile up, panicked gods blame the CEO Queen for Goblin’s escape. Resentment builds in the company and violent factions start pushing for the extermination of the human race. Will Queen Louhi’s Nerd Squad, a group of angry gods, and Richard (a down-on-his-luck private eye),  manage to find Mysantheos in time to prevent what promises to be the bloodiest conflict between men and god ever?

About the Author:

Gabriele Russo, AKA Lucie-Gabrielle Jolicoeur-Rousseau, was born in Quebec City amidst a family of book lovers – her father had dreamed of being a writer and both of her brothers are published authors.

Since she earned her Bachelor’s in History, it was no surprise (except to her) that she ended up working in restaurants, eventually owning two, which almost drove her mad. She sold them and was nursed back to pseudo-sanity by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.

That’s when she answered the family calling and decided to write. Armed with her ideas for the Gods Inc. series she went back to the University and got her Master’s in Creative Writing.

She now lives with her husband in Culpeper, Virginia, where she divides her time between painting, ripping apart and reconstructing her recently bought historical home, playing tennis and, of course, writing more books.

Germany, 1940
Half Romani, Tairin’s no stranger
to hiding her mixed blood from gypsy caravans. What she can’t hide is her
perpetual youth, courtesy of her shifter heritage. Every few years, she drops
out of sight, resurfacing in a new country to join a caravan where no one knows
her. She’s overstayed her welcome where she is, but Germany is at war, and
travel has become all but impossible for everyone targeted by the Reich.
Elliott’s clairvoyance is strong,
even for a Romani. Seer for all the caravans in Germany, he catches Tairin
eavesdropping outside their leader’s wagon one night. He should turn her in,
but it would mean her execution, and he can’t bring himself to do that.
Instead, he interrogates her. Her magic is different, but he can’t figure out
quite what she is.
Any association between Romani
and shifters is forbidden, and Tairin shields herself from Elliott’s probing.
She should leave right now, tonight. It would be easy enough. Shift to her wolf
form and run, keeping out of hunters’ gunsights. She’s on the edge of flight
when Elliott suggests a covert task to prove her loyalty. Tairin agrees
immediately, kicking herself for being weak where he’s concerned. Shifters and
Romani have no future together. Zero. Zilch.
She should be smart about this
and vanish into the night—before he discovers what she is and destroys her.

Book Three

Ann
Gimpel

Germany, 1940
Magic runs strong in Ilona, a
gypsy seer. Powerful ability isn’t valued in Romani women, so she focuses her
fortunetelling on inconsequential details. Nothing that could come back to
haunt her caravan if a prediction went bad. Rounded up and dumped in Dachau
prison camp, she has plenty of time to rue her decision to downplay her
ability. If she’d taken the time to scry her own future, she’d still be free.
A wolf shifter, Jamal made the
mistake of wedding a Romani woman centuries ago. His arrogance caused both
death and heartache, and he’s been alone ever since. The recent threat of
vampires joining the Third Reich has provided ample reason for shifters and Rom
to lay their ancient enmity aside and work together, but their détente is
fragile.
Jamal and a group of shifters
come across Ilona after her escape from Dachau. Vulnerable, terrified, she’s
fully prepared to fight. Her courage and mettle touch places in him he’d
thought were dead, but she’s Romani. His last relationship ended so badly, the
last thing he needs is to fall for another gypsy woman. He wrestles his
tumbling emotions into submission, but when she trains her enigmatic, gray gaze
on him, his resolve first weakens and then vanishes entirely.

About the Author:
Ann
Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a
psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been
stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the
backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not
1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those
in love with the mountains. It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s
writing evolved. Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag
friends and relatives along, Ann prefers solitude. Stories always ran around in
her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when
challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company.
Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months
later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a
beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.
Around
that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It
didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve
been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always
been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.
In
addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of
camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke
is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone
else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life
together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids
round out their family.

80,000 Words

Sometimes amnesia is a demon hunter’s best friend.

About the book

Luna Ashwind is the Grigori’s top assassin and her marks are the big, bad uglies that slither out of Hell. She’s worked for the secret society of demon hunters since they found her broken, bleeding and unconscious just four short years ago. They nursed her body back to health but her mind is a different story.

Lucifer’s made good use of his time in Hell. He’s learned of a Heaven-forged talisman with the power to either start or stop the biblical apocalypse without God’s approval. For centuries, he’s sent his best demons topside in search of the three artifacts needed to create this celestial weapon.

Hellhound wrangler Kurbane is topside to capture the angel who stole Cerberus’ key to the Gates of Hell, but when the trail leads him to Luna, he realizes he’d bitten off more than he can chew. Luna is no mere angel – she’s the life or death of all creation.

excerpt

North Roxbury neighborhood, Boston, Massachusetts

While easing through the damp, sour smelling alleyway, Luna halted mid-stride as a black, swirling vortex, roughly the size of a Volvo, shredded the foggy air around her. A rough gust of wind whipped past her, sending trash and other debris scattering around her feet.

When a huge silhouette stepped out of the whirlwind, Luna instantly abandoned her ninja-like tactics and stood in open-mouth shock.

In her four years of training, she’d never heard of demons using teleportation; their life-force was usually directly within the vicinity of where the Watchers sent their soldiers.

Smoky tendrils of smoke inked outward from the center, sending clouds of wispy darkness to pollute the air. After a few moments, the strands slowly receded and their absence revealed the hulking beast. Momentum from the vortex shoved the demon forward, making sure it cleared the swirling chasm. Then it shrank back in on itself as quickly as it appeared.

The demon, which she now recognized from her textbooks as an Arsena – a lesser demon that crawled through Hell on its underbelly, begging for scraps – snarled and gnashed its razor sharp teeth before rushing toward her. A fashionably late entrance coupled with its particular method of travel succeeded in totally throwing Luna off her game. All her training went right out the window.

She was only briefly discombobulated, but long enough for the demon. It rushed past her and its large scaly arm caught her beneath the chin; its momentum and element of surprise clothes-lined her painfully, yet beautifully.

She hit the asphalt back-first, air whooshing from her lungs on an elongated hiss. She gasped and gulped, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as she tried to force sweet air back into her lungs.

I’m sorry, Luna, Barr’s soft voice flitted through their telepathic connection. I failed to see it till it was too late. Her falcon-companion’s intense, guilt-ridden emotions blasted through her mind like a frigid tidal wave, the unexpected intrusion seized her mind and almost fried her brain.

Can you believe a freaking Arsena rode a vortex in and attacked me?!? Luna projected her thoughts and then shut down their mental connection. She focused on keeping well away from the sharp claws and gnashing teeth.

Once she was capable, she drew a complete breath and then quickly rolled back to her feet. She lowered herself into an offensive crouch with hands fisted before her and waited for the demon’s next move.

It swung its huge, slimy, talon-tipped left hand at her. She saw it coming and managed to duck in the nick of time, saving herself from sporting a severed head.

An angry roar shook the ground and the Arsena swung its right arm around from behind its huge body. Luna’s eyes widened in shock when she realized he had a gun and it was aimed it directly at her. Demons never used human weapons.

“Shit,” she hissed and feigned to her right milliseconds before a shot rent the night. Pain exploded in her left shoulder and she crashed to the pavement for the second time in less than five minutes. Her breath, again, whooshed from her body.

She’d never felt so helpless before and was lost as what to do next.

Pain blazed through her system, her blood sizzling in her veins like fresh lava. Inhaling deeply, she pushed herself to her feet, determined to get her ass moving. She’d suffered plenty of wounds during training, but never something this severe. Zeke had stressed the danger of hunting, now she understood his blatant reluctance to send her on her first mission alone.

Luna, get out of there! Barr roared forcefully, shattering the concrete wall Luna had shielding her mind. Depth-less black spots converged in Luna’s mind as a result of Barr re-establishing their mental connection without Luna’s consent.

Luna winced as agonizing heat tore through her head, finding every nerve ending possible. She blinked rapidly in hopes of shaking the side-effects of the falcon’s mind-meld. Her stomach rolled in response, threatening to send her dinner back up.

Barr’s forceful invasion, combined with the gunshot wound, left Luna not only temporarily blind, but also in intense agony. Her body weakened and grew sluggish.

Summoning every ounce of strength she had left, she pushed herself back to her feet and slowly approached the demon. When she was within reach, she shoved him roughly and lurched past him, heading for the alley on the right

The Arsena’s roar only partially registered through the shock flooding her mind. Her main concern wasn’t that she’d been shot by a demon with a human weapon. It was the fact that she ran from a demon to being with; something she’d never believed she’d do.

A warrior at heart, Luna abhorred weakness as much as cowardice. Yet Barr was right. There was no way she’d survive a battle now that she’d been bodily wounded and mentally incapacitated.

Already, the gushing wound leeched her strength too quickly for her liking.

“Zeke’s going to kill me,” Luna declared, her thoughts flashing to her mentor. She’d all but bullied her way into this mission by swearing she’d be safe and now here she was severely wounded. She inhaled deeply and pumped her legs harder, putting as much distance between her and the demon as possible.

“Have we received word from her?” Sem stormed into the Control room. When Luna failed to check in after a couple hours, he’d grown worried. Allowing for the possibility she ran into unexpected problems, he’d gave her some extra time. Now, it was way passed time for her to have returned.

“No.” Penn shook his head, no hint of emotion in his voice. He wasn’t one to get ruffled over anything unless there was reason to. Penn was all about patience and it was one virtue Sem could do without. When it came to Luna, few of the Watchers had much patience. She was the daughter of a dead friend and it was their responsibility to protect her no matter what. Even if she wasn’t the salvation of them all, Sem would still lay down his immortal soul to protect her.

“When was her last update?” Sem asked and ran long fingers through his narrow strip of purple spikes.

“Twelve a.m. Dispatch received an update.” Penn narrowed his eyes as fingers flew over computer keys. “She’d landed and began her search for the demon.” He turned to spear Sem with ice-blue eyes; worry glazing their surface. “That was over ten hours ago Sem. She should have called by now. It wouldn’t have taken her ten minutes to shred the bastard. Something’s wrong.”

Sem’s blood turned to fire in his veins. The thought of Luna hurt didn’t sit so well with him. “Maybe she lost her phone, have you activated her internal tracker?”

Penn turned back to the computer and more keys clacked noisily. The air suddenly grew very heavy and a malevolent aura cloaked the room. Sem sighed heavily. The last thing he needed right now was the angry man now standing behind him. He felt the fiery blast of anger emanating from the soldier and sighed heavily. They’d barely avoided a blood bath earlier and it was only Luna’s presence that had calmed him.

“We’re looking for her now, Zeke,” Sem warned before the other man could even utter a word. He knew his brother too well. If Zeke had the slightest inkling Luna was in danger, he would be gone in the blink of an eye. No matter that none of them could pinpoint her location; Zeke would blast through the Nether until he found her.

As one of the Watchers with the ability to transport, Zeke was an ever present threat to the group’s anonymity. His emotions, which he denied having on a regular basis, seemed to rule him when it came to Luna.

“You’d better find her or I will,” Zeke threatened and slammed the stainless steel door shut behind him before propping himself against it. With arms and feet crossed, he presented an unmovable roadblock. His silent challenge blasted into the air, engulfing the room in an almost malevolent fog.

“There’s no signal,” Penn murmured. “I can’t find her anywhere.”

A loud crash preceded the slamming of the Control room door. When Sem turned, Zeke was gone and a hole marred his formerly pristine door.

“Dammit, I just had that door replaced,” Sem cursed. “Keep looking Penn, I’ll go with Zeke to make sure he doesn’t kill anyone he shouldn’t. Send the area coordinates to me; maybe we can search until something pops up.”

Penn nodded, his floppy blonde hair bouncing.

“Sure thing boss,” he called.

As Sem raced down the hall toward the weapon’s room, he recalled the night Luna literally came crashing into their lives and hoped with every fiber of his being that she was alright. Injured, he could handle, but if she were dead, they were all fucked.

He slid to a halt when Zeke emerged, armed to the teeth, sporting a murderous glint in his eyes. It was moments like this, that made Sem grateful that Zeke was on his side. The warrior made a formidable enemy and Heaven help anything that dared harm Luna.

Before she’d left home, the thought of a November vacation  in Hawaii had made Stacey Hough giddy. But now that it was actually happening, all she could think about were the drops of sweat wending their way down her spine as her sandals made flapping noises against the concrete walkway.

“Just a few more feet until air-conditioning,” she said to herself, eyeing the resort’s beautiful, air-conditioned tower of hotel rooms that would give her sanctuary. This was less than ideal. Her cousin would pick the hottest November on record to have her destination wedding.

Stacey upped her pace, trying to ignore the beads of moisture tickling her upper lip. That wasn’t exactly fair. Sabrina couldn’t have known how hot it would be. Besides, it wasn’t the bride’s fault that her maid of honor was sweating like a teenage boy who’d gotten caught watching Internet porn. That was all  Stacey’s doing.

“I’ll go to the beach,” she’d said to herself after lunch with the bride. It had been years since she’d been on a real vacation, and   she had intended to enjoy it. Of course, she couldn’t actually find the guts to put on the new swimsuit she’d bought for the trip. The imaginary confidence she’d been leaning on up until this point went poof in the harsh light of the tropical paradise. No way could she go out in any kind of swimwear. There were way too many witnesses. The trade-off was a nice walk. But what should have been a relaxing hour-long stroll along a beautiful coastline had turned into a hot, sandy trek across what might as well have been the Sahara, and had turned Stacey’s joy at the vacation into a chore. It sucked, but the temporary discomfort would be over soon.

The artificially cooled air caressed Stacey’s cheeks, and she gave a heavy sigh of relief as the glass hotel doors swung shut behind her. Finally.  Punching the button for the elevator, she glanced upward.

Crap. Her strawberry-blond hair was frizzing around her fore- head. Turning, she looked in the mirror that was mounted on the opposite wall and promptly blanched.

Good Lord, she looked like a nightmare. Red, sweaty, and fright- ening. If she ran into any small children on the way to her room, they’d probably need therapy for years to come.

This was why she stayed home. Work was safe. Work, she could throw herself into with abandon and not come out looking like a cartoon villain. Oh well. She had planned to shower before tonight’s bachelorette party anyway. There were a couple of hours left for her to make herself look presentable.

The elevator doors glided open, and Stacey’s stomach plummeted through the floor. Shit.

“Good Lord, Stacey, what happened to you? You look terrible!” Aunt Beatrice wasted no time in pointing out the obvious as she exited the elevator.

“I went for a run. I’m training for the Iron Man,” Stacey joked drily as she passed her aunt.

Completely missing the sarcasm, Aunt Beatrice lit up with a smile. “Good! That is fabulous. You do need to exercise, but perhaps next time you should dress a bit differently? You aren’t wearing the right attire, and there are sweat stains on—”

The doors shut then, and Stacey slumped against the back wall of  the elevator.

Getting angry was exhausting and pointless. Aunt Beatrice had been dropping comments about her weight and other shortcomings since Stacey was in preschool. Her family had won the genetic lottery, and Stacey was the only exception. Not that she was ugly. She’d gotten the reddish-blond hair and blue eyes, sure, but the height and good metabolism had definitely skipped her. At least her own parents were vacationing in Europe, and unable to join in the fun of pointing out her faults. Fortunately, Bree was nothing like her mother in atti- tude. Bree was Stacey’s favorite relative, and one of her closest friends. There wasn’t much Stacey wouldn’t endure for her, and that included record-high temperatures and snooty Aunt Beatrice.

When she finally arrived on her floor, Stacey dragged an arm across her cheeks and walked determinedly to her room. Tonight would be just what she needed. Bree always did wonders for Stacey’s mood, and the other bridesmaid, Eliza, seemed really nice. They’d go out for pedicures, a fancy dinner, and then a night out dancing and cutting loose.

Stacey forced a smile. It would be a blast. Just the thing to help her shake off these blues.

Excerpt 1 :

His dream was broken by the feel of something soft against his mouth. He opened his eyes and blinked, thinking for a moment that he was still asleep. Flooding his vision was the red-haired siren of his dream, crouched above him.

Her dark brown eyes were staring straight into his. He held her glance for a long while, then took a minute to glimpse at the rest of her. Her features were well defined and graceful. Her long luxurious hair, braided in a few places, spilled over her firm, ample curves onto the ground in front of her. Looking at it now in reality, he saw a unique, vibrant shade of red, darker and almost auburn in the shade of the trees, with strands of pure copper and gold highlighted by the sun through the forest canopy. Her large eyes sparkled. They were alight with intrigue and kind concern, but Luca saw a touch of the tired sadness that he was accustomed to seeing in his own dim reflection. Too much for someone her age.

Luca puzzled over her age for more than a few seconds. Her beauty and slender frame suggested a girl nearing her thirties, yet her countenance told him she had been through more than her share of life’s troubles, even for a woman of the rough and unprotected countryside.

She stared at his clear crystal blue eyes, framed by thick dark brows. A straight nose, tightly pursed lips and strong chin completed his face. Despite his pale complexion, he was dark and beautiful. She didn’t let it show on her face, but the woman had become immediately enamored of him.

Her fingers rested lightly on his mouth. After a silence that lasted a bit too long, she was the first to speak.

“I’ll have you out of there in just a minute,” she whispered. “I won’t hurt you, but we have to be quiet.”

She turned her head to the side to get a glimpse of the valley below.

“I’m looking out for a friend, and just spotted you here a minute ago. Once I’m sure he’s okay, I’ll start digging.”

Luca said nothing. When she was sure that he wouldn’t make a sound, she removed her hand from his lips and moved closer to the hill’s edge, looking for her companion. Luca got a better look at what she was wearing.

A plaid scarf in sapphire blue with hints of gold thread was wrapped around her neck and waist, covering a tunic dress of the same shade. Her legs were covered by high, soft leather brown boots and blue leggings, but Luca spied shapely thighs at the edge of her skirt. She wore a utility belt across her chest which hinted at her generous cleavage, despite her modest neckline. Above, his eyes traced the silhouette of her long, pale, comely neck with excitement, but he quickly quashed the flutter in his heart before it developed, and redirected his gaze.

At her hips, she wore two short swords, and the hilt of a dagger peeked out from the top of her boot. She seemed sure of herself, and didn’t appear the least bit threatened by Luca. She didn’t react to seeing him for the first time in the manner customary to women, and even scores of young men; they usually succumbed quickly to his outward charms—his dark aura and hypnotic stare, two of his many vampiric qualities. But she didn’t gasp in fear or swoon in ecstasy. That puzzled him.

A small part of him wondered why she hadn’t immediately responded to his visage, with a little disappointment.  He chalked it up to her finding him covered in dirt from the neck down. But he knew that shouldn’t have stopped her from surrendering to his trance-inducing stare, even for a moment. He was intrigued by this girl, who had just happened to appear as his dream self was making love to her.

Her garb made her even more of a mystery. He only noticed these things, which were inconsequential to him, because the fabrics, colors, and design of her wardrobe were infinitely superior, and foreign, to anything he had ever seen, including some of the priciest fashions available in the biggest cities. He much preferred the naked version of her, which had dissipated with her actual presence. But even in all her gear, chosen for its rugged functionality, she looked regal. He saw her gesture to her friend, then she turned to face him once more.

“Okay, it looks like whoever did this to you is gone. I’ll have you walking around again soon. Who did do this to you, anyway?” she asked, as she began to claw at the earth with her hands.

“I did.”

His voice was as toneless and nonchalant as ever. Her hands paused for a moment, still holding clumps of dirt, and she looked at him quizzically.

“You buried yourself? Why on earth would you do a thing like that?”

Here came the part he always dreaded, but was compelled to divulge nevertheless.

“I’m a dhampir.”

“A what?”

Here, Luca thought, was the reaction he had been expecting, but had been unusually delayed. He waited for what he had said to sink in, but it didn’t. She was still honestly waiting for an answer. He repeated himself.

“I’m a dhampir.”

“What’s a dhampir?”

He just stared at her, his eyes going slightly wide.

“I’m not from around here,” she explained, “so you’re going to have to fill me in.”

Now it was Luca’s turn to pause. Never, in his entire life, had he been asked to explain this term. In a world whose entire existence revolved around the struggle between vampires and humans, to find someone who was not familiar with this word was truly unheard of. He experienced an emotion he had almost never had occasion to experience. He was, in a word, stunned.

“I’m part human, part vampire.”

“Oh. Ohhhh.”

She finally got it. He waited now for the standard response. Instead, a look of embarrassment swept over her face as she began hurriedly replacing the soil she had disturbed.

“I am so sorry, I didn’t realize. I didn’t mean to intrude on your resting. You looked like you were having a hell of a dream.”

If you only knew. But, was she actually apologizing for bothering his slumber? Luca’s revelation hadn’t fazed her in the slightest. His amazement at her response only piqued his interest in her more.

“It’s alright, I was just getting up.”

Though she had interrupted him, he felt rested.

“In that case, would you like me to help you?”

“Do what you like.”

She resumed her exhumation of Luca. “My name is Kate, by the way.”

Luca stretched his muscles slightly to a sitting position, the remaining earth above him falling away. He took her outstretched palm with his freed right hand, and they both stood up.

“Call me Luca.”
