Because life is one big ballroom – and all we can do is dance… Former UK
dance champion Caroline Elliott has two burning passions in her life:
her sexy, young Spanish lover Antonio, and the weekly Ballroom dance
class she teaches to a diverse group of enthusiastic locals in the
small English town of Castleham where she lives. But Caroline has a
problem. The numbers attending her class have dwindled, and unless
she can somehow breathe new life into it, she will have no choice but
to close it down. A dance display at the local Arts Festival might
just be the perfect opportunity to showcase her students and pull in
those much-needed new members. How difficult could it be? With the
date of the display approaching, however, illness, affairs and
relationship break-ups threaten to crush Caroline’s hopes. As she
battles to keep rehearsals on track and soothe her students’
rampant nerves, she must also conquer the demons of a long-ago
tragedy in her own life. Will she be able to let go of her fears and
step into the spotlight once again? Heel Lead is an emotional,
passionate and poignant story that entertains while it tugs at your
heartstrings. In this short yet compelling novel, author Dawn K.
Henderson presents a captivating tale of the power of love, dance and
the ties that bind us.

She lives and writes in the mystical, magical county of Wiltshire,
England surrounded by crop circles, the ancient & mysterious

Luz by Leslie DJ – April Blitz + #Giveaway

03/04/17

Luz: A Novella
Leslie DJ
Genre: Women’s Fiction
Publisher: Sinister Girlz
Date of Publication: March 24, 2017
ISBN: 978-0998127828
Number of pages: 160
Word Count:  43,000
Cover Artist: Michele Catalano
Tagline: He’s going to propose. She’s going to tie up loose ends.
Book Description:
Luz Vargas is a promising young Latina writer from Washington Heights, a predominantly Dominican neighborhood in New York City. Who upon receiving top honors for her short story, “Here and There” from the prestigious Quisqueya Writers of Tomorrow Association, Luz’s boyfriend, Luke, suggests a couple’s getaway to the Dominican Republic where he plans to propose. But when the trip to the Island brings her face to face with a past love, Luz is torn between honoring her commitment to Luke and revisiting an island romance.
The story is told through a series of vignettes that chronicle Luz’s struggle to reconcile her American identity with her Dominican side.

Excerpt:
Luz awoke to the
sound of roosters crowing. Her eyes fluttered as they adjusted to the sunlight
that crept through the tangerine-colored curtains. As she sat up and reached
across the bed, familiarizing herself with her surroundings, the man beside her
stirred. She placed a hand over her mouth and looked down to the tiled floor
while she recalled the events of the previous night. For a moment, she had
forgotten where she was. Luz had been vacationing in her mother’s homeland, the
Dominican Republic, for the first time in over a year, the longest she had gone
without paying the island a visit. She traveled there so frequently that she
knew the immigration officers by name and the female officers often came from
behind the glass partition to give her a hug. She steered clear of the male
immigration officers because they were known to get a little too friendly,
especially with foreign-born Dominicanas traveling on their own.
Usually she went
to the DR alone, but this time Luke, her boyfriend of seven months, was
accompanying her. Luke was the complete opposite of Luz. He was short, stout
and fair-skinned with light-colored eyes that changed depending on his mood or
the color of his shirt. Luz was tall with sizeable hips but a slender figure.
She spent most of her mornings on a treadmill or punching and kicking Tae
Bo-style to old VHS tapes. She had long, jet-black hair and a tan complexion.
They rooted for opposite teams—he for his home team, the Red Sox, while Luz was
a seasonal Yankees fan — which meant they were bound to break up during the
post-season depending on whose team made it further into the playoffs and how
much gloating the other could withstand. Luke enjoyed his scotch neat while Luz
preferred a cold cerveza now and then and only resorted to hard drinks when in
desperate need of a pick-me-up. They were such opposites, in fact, that many of
their friends often joked that the only thing they had in common was the first
two letters of their names.
Even so, Luke
was kind and understanding and ‘got’ Luz. He especially understood and
respected her need for writing, encouraging her and even submitting discarded
manuscripts to local contests behind her back. He was handsome, well-mannered
and the first real American boy to pursue Luz. She appeared to be living the
American Dream.

Excerpt:

When Carrie
opened the door and stepped inside, sunlight streamed in through the dirty
windows. Even though the barn had been vacant for years, the air smelled of hay
and horses.
Looking to her
left, she saw a man shaving. He’d glanced up when Carrie opened the doors, but
returned his gaze to the small mirror tacked to the wooden beam. He was bare
from the waist up. His chest was lean and muscular, with dark brown hair from
mid-chest to his waistline. His arms were powerfully built, and his right hand
was steady as he scraped the white soap from his angular jaw with a razor. His
dark blue uniform pants with gold braid down the side were tucked into
knee-high black leather boots. He stood at least six feet tall, and though
Carrie hadn’t made her living in the carnival, she guessed he was probably
younger than her, likely in his mid to late twenties. He peered at the small
mirror, tilting his chin to swipe away the shaving soap. Carrie waited to speak
until after he’d finished with the ivory-handled straight blade and dipped it
into the basin of soapy water.
“Good morning,”
she said.
His expression
was an equal mix of surprise and annoyance. He dropped the razor and grabbed
his shirt off a nearby nail. He turned his back to Carrie and pulled it on.
“You can see me,
madam?” he asked, buttoning his shirt and stuffing it into his pants.
“Yes. Can you
see me?”
“I can, but I
believe I have the advantage. I’m dead. You are not.” He turned and glared at
her. His eyebrows furrowed as though he wasn’t quite sure how they’d arrived at
the point of introductions.
“I’m sorry to
intrude. I’m Carrie. Carrie Hansen.” She extended her hand.
He reached to
shake her hand, but his fingers passed through hers. They both jerked back.
“I’m sorry. I
really didn’t mean to intrude,” she said.
“You surprised
me. That’s all. We seldom receive visitors, especially living ones who can see
us.” He put on his blue uniform coat and fastened the long row of brass
buttons. “I’m Major Thomas Gentry, at your service.” He bowed.
“I’m sorry I
startled you. I sometimes forget ghosts aren’t accustomed to being seen.”
His eyes
narrowed and he frowned. “How may I be of service to you, Miss Hansen?”
“Where can I
find Colonel Stratton? I need to speak with him.”
His dark blue
eyes showed his increasing puzzlement. “The living do not go looking for
Colonel Stratton. What business have you with him?”
“I bought this
house, and I intend to live here.”
“You bought
Stratton House?”
“And I need to
speak with the colonel.”
Major Gentry
shook his head as though to sort through the details. “Please forgive me. You
bought Stratton House, you intend to live here, and you wish to speak with the
home’s proprietor, Colonel Stratton?”
“I thought we’d
covered that,” she said. “You don’t get many visitors, do you?”

Genre: Contemporary Women’s Fiction

Susan Schild welcomes you back to the offbeat
Southern town of Willow Hill, North Carolina, for a humorous,
heartwarming story of new beginnings, do-overs, and
self-discovery…

When it comes to marriage, third time’s
the charm for Linny Taylor. She’s thrilled to be on her honeymoon
with Jack Avery, Willow Hill’s handsome veterinarian. But just like
the hair-raising white water rafting trip Jack persuades her to take,
newlywed life has plenty of dips and bumps.
Jack’s twelve-year-old son is resisting all Linny’s efforts to be the
perfect stepmother, while her own mother, Dottie, begs her to tag
along on the first week of a free-wheeling RV adventure. Who knew
women “of a certain age” could drum up so much trouble? No sooner
is Linny sighing with relief at being back home than she’s helping
her frazzled sister with a new baby…and dealing with an unexpected
legacy from her late ex. Life is fuller—and richer—than she ever
imagined, but if there’s one thing Linny’s learned by now, it’s
that there’s always room for another sweet surprise…

Linny’s heartbeat galloped under her life jacket as they shot down the rapids of the Ocasoula River. Eyes wide, she watched as their orange raft careened toward a jagged boulder, bumped it hard, and spun them toward a patch of choppy water. As the water rushed around the three of them—Linny, her new husband Jack, and their beautiful, Ms. Outward Bound–type goddess of a river guide—they dug deep and paddled hard, straining to pull through the eddy. With a whoosh, they were pulled backward down the roaring, foaming river. Linny shot Jack a panicky glance, but he was grinning exultantly and looking like he was having the time of his life. With the flick of a braid and a pirate’s smile, the guide thrust her paddle into the rapids, turned the raft around, and steered them downstream toward calmer water. Too soon to relax, though. Linny saw more rough waters ahead and tensed.

Be a shame to lose a third husband, she thought crazily and paddled harder.

The nimble-footed photographer from the outdoor center jogged along a path on the riverbank, snapping away as their raft rocketed toward the Turbinator, the Class III rapid that roiled ahead in the home stretch of the river trip. The photographer’s ponytail bounced as he raced ahead of them, taking shots as their raft bucked, dove, and finally glided through the rain-swollen Ocasoula.

Soon, a shivering Linny stood at the takeout, hugging herself and rubbing her arms. She’d been splashed thoroughly and didn’t want to think about how cold the water would have been if they’d flipped over. Though it was late June, the guide told them the water temperature was only in the midfifties. Linny found herself grinning like a fool as she waited for Jack to come back from the truck with his wallet to pay for their pictures. She’d been terrified, but she’d had a blast.

A white water rafting trip might not be high on most women’s lists of a must-do on a honeymoon, but when Linny had seen how Jack’s eyes sparkled as he reminisced about a rafting trip he’d taken when he was in his twenties, she’d said, “Let’s do it!” in an enthusiastic, practically perky voice she’d hardly recognized. In this new and complicated marriage, being a good sport and flexible as Gumby were going to ease the way. Though rafting wasn’t her thing, Jack had cheerfully gone on the vineyard tour with her yesterday and, on the drive up to the mountains, had tagged along, not looking bored, as she’d poked through vintage aprons and yellow Nancy Drew books at an antique store.

“Here you go, ma’am.” The young man held out his camera and scratched one mesh- sandaled foot with the other as he watched her view the shots he’d taken.

In perfect clarity, the fellow had caught them at the moment she and Jack got sling-shot skyward in their raft after diving down into the roiling water of that last rapid. Linny peered more closely at the picture. The photographer had captured the Carolina blue sky day, the Day-Glo orange of the raft, the lithe young goddess at the helm, and her and Jack—the glowing, sun-drenched newlyweds. Twice coming down that river they’d almost flipped and been swept into the churning waters. Linny’s teeth had chattered and she’d buzzed with adrenaline and fear, but she looked alive and exhilarated as she beamed at Jack, pure joy in her eyes. With powerful arms, he was digging away with his paddle, helping power them through. But Linny spotted two details that made her eyes well up: Jacks’ new gold band glinting in the sunlight and the look he’d given her just as the photographer had taken the shot was one of wonder and delight. He looked like he was thinking, How did I get this lucky?

“You did a great job.” Linny smiled at the young photographer.

“Thanks.” The young man blushed and pulled down the brim of his cap. He pointed to the visitors’ center. “Just give me a minute to load the pictures and you can pick the ones you want.”

“Thanks. We’ll be over as soon as my husband gets back,” she said.

He raised a hand and loped off.

Linny loved saying my husband. She’d probably said it too many times over the three days of this honeymoon. My husband and I are from Willow Hill. My husband is a veterinarian. My husband likes unsweetened tea. Linny smiled at herself. Yup, she was being obnoxious, but she didn’t care. She was so dang happy that she couldn’t stop. Well, at least for a while.

At age thirty-nine and with her streak of bad luck with husbands, the odds of her and Jack finding each other and falling in love weren’t great. Linny sent up a quick prayer of pure gratefulness. After her beloved first husband, Andy, had died of a brown recluse spider bite while cleaning out a shed for Linny—an item on the too-long honey-do lists she always kept for him—she’d been lost for so many years and thought she’d never be happy again. Then Buck the charmer came along. She should have known a golden boy driving a vintage Caddy wouldn’t be good husband material, but she’d married him anyway. He’d turned out to be trouble, but just as she was considering divorcing him, he’d up and died on her. When his aneurism blew while he was in bed with a woman named Kandi, he’d left her broke.

Linny had sworn she’d steer clear of men or die trying, and then she’d met Jack. Technically, she’d accidentally hit him in the head with a bourbon bottle while recycling at the dump. She smiled and shook her head, remembering. Most women would pretty up that how-we-met story, but Linny told people the unvarnished version. Maybe she just wanted to spread the word that second chances, fresh starts, and true love were all still possible, even at her ages. The happily ever after you yearn for just might not look the way you thought it would.

So, a few days ago in a backyard ceremony, Linny had married Jack. A small-town vet with a twelve-year-old son and an exquisite ex-wife who was just a little too chummy with him for Linny’s taste, Jack came with complications. But so had she. And today she was buoyant and happy.

Recovering, Megan finds herself drawn to Jackson, but she’s not sure that she can be anything than a city girl, even for love. Can Jackson, in his quiet, strong, country-boy style, convince her to take life in a new direction, with him?

 excerpt

“Look out!”

Megan saw a blur of cream through her lens, and was about to put down the camera when something connected with the side of her skull. She screamed, the only reaction she could manage. An explosion went off in her head. Tiny sparks flashed on the edge of her vision as she fell backward. Her mind filled with something like a night sky, black with tiny lights that crept further into her vision every time she blinked. It fascinated and distracted her from the pain that throbbed in her head.

She thudded on her backside on the concrete. A new wave of pain swept through her body. Air escaped from her lungs and Megan gasped. She managed to piece together that she’d been hit in the head, though by what exactly she wasn’t sure. People rushed towards her.

Embarrassment flooded into her cheeks. The last thing she wanted to be was the center of attention. That’s why she was a photographer. She could hide behind the camera. My camera? She reached for it, and sighed with relief when her fingers wrapped around it. She looked down at her SLR digital Canon camera, and it appeared to be in one piece. It was hard to tell because of the pounding in her head.

More stars flashed. She noticed they twinkled in time with the bursts of pain.

“They don’t have points.” Megan knew she had spoken, but her voice sounded faraway, and not at all like her own.

“Are you okay?” A man knelt beside her. He was one of the men she’d been distracted by. She tried to look at him, but could only see the flashing stars now retreating to the edge of her vision. A fog seeped into her mind and she struggled to think clearly.

“No points,” she said again with disappointment. She’d never had a serious injury before, never broken any bones, nothing like today’s accident. So, this is what it’s like to see stars. The expression used didn’t describe the experience at all. Megan touched the side of her head, to make sure it was still there. She hadn’t blanked out which she figured was a good thing.

“What are you talking about?” The man touched her shoulder.

“The stars I can see,” said Megan, not totally processing what he had said. She looked at him. He was young, mid- twenties, about her age. His broad-rimmed hat hid most of his blond hair, and his blue eyes were crystal sharp. Light stubble edged his broad jawline. He was hot. She was rather impressed she had managed to work that out through the haze flooding her mind.

He rested his hand on her shoulder. “My Bruce hit your head, more like grazed it along the side from the looks of the mark, but still I’m sorry he was such a grump.”

“Bruce?” Megan looked at him, trying to understand. “Is that your name?”

“No. My bull. His hoof struck your head. Lucky it was only a half jump he made, and it wasn’t a full on blow.”

“Oh, so that’s what happened.” She wasn’t sure it was a half kick from the way her head felt. The adrenalin was dissipating and a heavy thudding took hold in her head. Megan tried to smile at the man by her side. This wasn’t the time to flirt, but heck, she couldn’t help it.

A word from the author

I asked Liliana what motivates her to write? She responded:

I’ve always written stores, for me its natural, normal and it’s a creative outlet I enjoy. Because of this it makes it tricky to try and pinpoint my motivation to write. It’s just something I do, and I can’t imagine not writing (it’s even been said to me I get grumpy if I haven’t written that day). When I dig deeper to try and find the reason why I write, I think of things like; because it’s fun, I enjoy making up characters and the worlds for them to play in. But there’s more if I dig even deeper. I believe the true motivation for me is my fascination with story telling. I like listening to people’s stories and reading books, watching movies and playing computer games. Yet, it’s more than that. I enjoy telling my own stories and sharing them with people, as that’s when the characters truly come to life.

Standing quietly in an upper bedroom of the beautiful Garland Mansion, Hattie Morran gazed out the open window over the lush green grounds known as the Silver Creek Estate. She stood quietly in the upper bedroom of the beautiful Garland Mansion, her wedding dress and auburn hair fluttering lightly in the soft Missouri breeze, and sighed. The cold steel of her Colt 45, nestled among the flowers of her wedding bouquet, belied the picture of a beautiful bride awaiting her once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Without breaking her gaze, she spoke to her sister, who sat silently on a sapphire blue settee in the middle of the ornately decorated room.

So help me, God, Dakota,” Hattie said with great conviction, “if Abner does not come across with my demands this time, this will be the shortest marriage on record.”

What do you plan to do, sis?” Dakota asked.

Turning toward her sister, who’d leaned forward since she’d last looked, Hattie slowly lowered her bouquet, reached in, and cocked the revolver. “Put it this way . . . if he doesn’t, the man is goin’ to meet up with an untimely death . . . or I am goin’ to shoot off the only thin’ in life that jackass holds dear.”

Dakota’s jaw dropped. “You wouldn’t!”

Oh, wouldn’t I? Just you hide and watch, sister dear. Believe me, I’ve taken just about all I’m goin’ to take from Abner Garland. At this point, I’d just as soon kill him as look at him. Of course, I can’t do that because I love his Mama so much, and even though he is a despicable person, he is her son.” With her feelings for Abner’s mother, Rebecca Garland, calming her, Hattie reached back into her bouquet and uncocked the revolver.

Tapped

By
Liz Crowe
Genre:
NA Romance

When wealthy brewery owner Austin
Fitzgerald meets sexy saleswoman Evelyn Benedict, angry sparks fly.
They seem destined to clash, until a hot hookup in a cold beer cooler
changes everything.
For Austin, it’s a life-altering
moment that sets him on a path away from his birthright, while Evelyn
must face her fears about committing to a man considered the playboy
of the micro-brewing world.
The power of preconceived notions
nearly tears them apart—until they meet up with brew master Ross,
who opens their eyes to a deeper, even more erotic connection. But
three strong personalities don’t always make for the best emotional
mix and when a simple misunderstanding causes chaos, it’s up to
Ross to repair the tattered shreds of their relationship.

Amazon best-selling author, mom of three, Realtor, beer blogger, brewery marketing expert, and soccer fan, Liz Crowe is a Kentucky native and graduate of the University of Louisville currently living in Ann Arbor. She has decades of experience in sales and fund raising, plus an eight-year stint as a three-continent, ex-pat trailing spouse.
Her early forays into the publishing world led to a groundbreaking fiction subgenre, “Romance for Real Life,” which has gained thousands of fans and followers interested less in the “HEA” and more in the “WHA” (“What Happens After?”). More recently she is garnering even more fans across genres with her latest novels, which are more character-driven fiction, while remaining very much “real life.”
With stories set in the not-so-common worlds of breweries, on the soccer pitch, in successful real estate offices and at times in exotic locales like Istanbul, Turkey, her books are unique and told with a fresh voice. The Liz Crowe backlist has something for any reader seeking complex storylines with humor and complete casts of characters that will delight, frustrate and linger in the imagination long after the book is finished.
Don’t ever ask her for anything “like a Budweiser” or risk bodily injury.

Rescuing Rembrandt
The Louvre Trilogy Book 3

lt-about-the-book

Three years after the end of WWII, Louvre curator Alain Darnay is still trying to find the owners of the artwork he saved for Jewish collectors during the war. As Jacques Jaujard’s tenure with the Louvre is coming to an end, Alain is sent a photograph of a Rembrandt painting that has been missing for almost fifty years. Ironically, the painting is the same one that Alain’s closest friend, Fritz Gerhard, did his dissertation on. A series of random clues follows the initial contact and Alain cannot resist trying to determine who has the painting and how to acquire it. As he puts the puzzle together, he falls in love with the Louvre’s newest curator, the beautiful Justine Charbonneau. Justine wouldn’t mind a relationship with Alain, if it weren’t for all the questions he won’t answer and the past he won’t talk about.
