Review of Hunt by Rachel Vincent

Hunt (Shifters #6.5)Hunt by Rachel Vincent
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love the Shifter series which is based around Faythe Sanders, who is a female werecat that becomes the first, female, pride enforcer.

Hunt is a short story that follows on from the six and final book in the werecat series, Alpha.

It is based around a young female werecat, Abby Wade. Abby makes her first appearance in Stray and it good to revisit the character to see her grown up, and over coming her fears, and doubts around her abilities to protect herself, and her friend. It is a bonus that the sexy werecat, now Alpha, Jace has a cameo in this story. He was one of my favorite characters in the original series. This is a highly entertaining story from Ms Vincent and if you enjoyed the Shifter series you will certainly enjoy this.

I am looking forward to reading the Lion’s share, which is a Wildcats novel. The first book in the spin off series. Thank you so much Ms Vincent.

I’d like to introduce my guest this week, Samanthya Wyatt.

My guest this week on the Author’s Blog is Samanthya Wyatt.

sam

Bio: Samanthya lives with her husband in the Shenandoah Valley. She left her accounting career and married a military man traveling and making her home in the United States and abroad. Once she found historical romance novels, she couldn’t put a book down. She fell in love with the characters and needed to know their happy ending.

One day she put words to paper creating a story of her own. The more she wrote, the more she became involved with the characters, and they seemed to take a life of their own. She relishes the challenge of penning a story with strong characters, a bit of humor, and active scenes. She enjoys creating new characters and bringing them together in a romantic tale. It took years of writing, joining RWA, joining chapters, entering contests, submissions & rejections which created the author she is today. By keeping her spirit and turning criticism into drive she has achieved her career as a published romance author.

Samanthya’s latest novel is The Only One, book 3 of The One and Only Series. Released on the 14th October 2015.

Something More

A determined man, a headstrong woman, and a battle of wills.

Matthew longs for a woman to share his life, not his bank account. He owns a prestigious company that he rules with an iron fist. On his way to an important meeting, a light flirtation turns into more than he expects. He meets a woman with more confidence and strength than most men. Long legs get his attention, but Carrie attracts his interest. The alluring beauty does not need his money, and makes it clear she does not need him. He accepts the unspoken challenge.

Carrie trusts no man. An executive partner, she possesses a confidence that makes her assertive and her aggressiveness toward the male gender is somewhat intimidating. Until a pair of mischievous eyes melts her defenses, and has her second guessing her convictions. The day he shoved her into that cab he must have chiseled a chink in her armor. Matthew charges into her well organized life, cracks the stone wall she’s built and instills an emotion she swore never to allow.

Infatuation and excitement spark a journey of passion and forbidden emotion where two people must overcome their earlier convictions to find an everlasting love.

Relax and lay the worries of the world off your shoulders and get lost in the pages of a romance. Become involved in a dream. Plunge into a world of fantasy. Live an adventure your heart can share.

Here’s more from The Only One

“I was not spying.”

“Of course you weren’t. Judging from the conversation I interrupted, no young girl would know the subject they were discussing anyway.”

Her face flushed scarlet. He arched a brow. Surely she had no idea the boys were speaking of tupping a girl’s skirts.

“You’re handsome,” the girl stated baldly, expanding a breath as if she’d held her mouth closed too long.

He didn’t know whether to be flattered or feel concern at a possible purpose behind her words.

“What do you know of handsome men?”

“My brothers, I guess are handsome. But they’re my brothers. I don’t care enough about other men to consider them handsome.”

Care?

“So then, why are you here?” He gave her his best glare.

“I’ve grown out of pigtails. I’m a woman now.”

Swallowing his amazement, he nearly choked. “Donning a dress does not make you a woman.” His gaze dipped in a slow, silent perusal. The damn girl’s breeches emphasized her curves, leaving nothing to a man’s imagination. Not that he should notice, of course, but . . . Damnation. She didn’t look the least like a child.

“I see you’ve resorted to breeches again. After your brothers’ reproaching insults, I would think you’d learned your lesson.”

She thrust out her chest. “Papa always said I had spirit. I am not unwise.”

“You think it wise to hide in a tackle bin? To be alone here with me?”

“You’re a duke. A gentleman.”

He gave a harsh laugh. “Being a duke does not make me a gentleman.”

“But Aunt Cornelia said English aristocrats live by their honor. You’re a nobleman. You have integrity, and morals.”

“Morals? Honor? A man lives by his own decree. What if I were to take liberties?”

“I can handle you.” Her eyes lit up and she seemed too sure of herself.

The gall of the chit.

With one quick movement, his hands shot out and jerked her against his chest. A gasp rushed from her throat, but she boldly held his gaze. With deliberate daring, his arms imprisoned her. He watched the emotions flitting over her face. He meant to punish, to teach, to frighten. His gaze lowered to her mouth.

He’d send her fleeing for good.

He captured her lips in a forceful kiss.

Her fingers twisted his shirt.

Good God, she kissed him back. With such enthusiasm, he was flabbergasted.

Unconscionable, that one so young should kiss with such skill. Had the damned girl been coached? She should slap him, call him a knave. Push him away, scream at him. Instead, she twined her arms about his neck while her warm, seeking tongue pirouetted a mating dance with his.

Chest heaving, he grabbed her shoulders and thrust her away.

“Where the hell did you learn to kiss like that?”

Carly can you give the readers a brief explanation of the Awakening?

The story continues with all the characters from the first book, but concentrates more on the developing relationship between Alex and Jennifer. We also see the character of Davy grow up in a freakishly fast way and exhibit powers nobody could have imagined

shamrock_400x600 (1)

Carly what will readers love most about your hero and heroine?

I think the humor in their relationship. They start out barely knowing anything about each other, yet are expected to get married and become a family. It’s a definite love/hate relationship for Alex and Jennifer in the beginning.

Do you have a favourite moment or scene from your book that you would like to  share?

Yes I do! “What?” Jennifer said. “I’m not ready to be married to you. I don’t even know you.”

Alex had had just about enough of her routine. “Listen, sweetheart, it’s no picnic being with you either. I’m tired of trying to live up to your lofty expectations. I’m not David Kyle, nor would I want to be. I’m doing this all for you, to protect you and Davy. A little gratitude would be welcome.”

“Excuse me?” Anger flashed in her eyes. “You are darn lucky that I even give you the time of day. You overbearing, egotistical control freak.”

“Control freak!” Alex shouted weakly. “Are we back to that song and dance again? Can’t you come up with some original material? I’ve busted my ass in order to help you, and you have the nerve to say I’m controlling you?”

“Oh, what a load of crap, Alex! You are not doing this for me or Davy. You are doing it for Lily.” Jennifer spun away from him in disgust.

What words best describe your book?

Fun and Freaky

Here is a little more about The Awakening.

ALEX McGUIRE never dreamed his life would take such a turn. His plan to complete college, become a lawyer, and marry his girlfriend, LILY LAVERY, tanked following his kidnapping to the alternate realm known as Paradise Valley. Now Alex has been ordered by a dead man, DAVID KYLE, to marry his young wife, JENNIFER BURKE KYLE, and raise their infant son, DAVY KYLE, as his own. That would be a great plan if it weren’t for the fact that Jennifer is still in a coma, has never met him, and her son has some strange attributes too.

JENNIFER BURKE KYLE woke from the coma to the realization that she was a widow and the mother of a young son who could read minds, create portals to an alternate realm, and have unforeseen growth spurts when he is in or near Paradise Valley. As if that wasn’t enough, a complete stranger has stated he is to marry her and raise her son as his own. All on the order of her dead husband, David.

DAVY KYLE was tickled pink that Alex McGuire would be his Dad and couldn’t wait for his mother to wake from the coma so the wedding could take place. What Davy didn’t see, was the trouble in the form of PRI, otherwise known as the Percival Research Institute. PRI agents were after his family and it was going to be up to Davy to hide them all until it was safe.

Together, Alex, Jennifer, Davy, and their friends from Paradise Valley, must join together to keep the family safe, destroy PRI, and protect the still comatose COLIN O’BRIEN, the last member of their Paradise Valley family. With the help of student nurse, DEANA COOK, they may just succeed in their plan and find happiness along the way.

For those of you who want to know more about this exciting series, here is an excerpt from Souls Estranged.

Prologue

Sunday

Sam

In the dim morning light of the hospital room, Sam Daggett watched the little cat stretch its front paws before zeroing intense green eyes on him.

“Roxana?” He scrutinized the feline for the slightest twitch of recognition.

Nothing.

Doubting Roxana’s spirit remained entwined within the gray and white cat, he moved his focus to Gretta Dobbs. She slept peacefully with her hand nestled in his. Neither of their families had returned to the hospital. Her garnet ring caught his attention and immediately a sense of foreboding crept up his spine.

His heart sped as images of his time traveling, out-of-body adventure with Gretta flashed through his mind. Roxana, Gretta’s long-dead ancestor, enabled their souls to entwine within nineteenth-century lovers in order to gather information on the cursed ring. Pride, determination, and fear filled him.

“I’m so sorry we didn’t find all of the answers we needed,” Sam whispered as he lifted her hand to his lips. He watched her eyes and listened for the beep of the heart monitor to quicken, satisfied she remained in dreamland. “I know you don’t remember our time together or what we’ve been through.”

He shuddered at the memories. His gaze fell back to the ring. Frustration filled him. The urge to rip it off her hand pounded through him, but he remembered she remained cursed with or without the ring.

Control. I must control my emotions.

He refocused his thoughts on the present and relished in the gratitude of simply being in the same room with her.

A soft sigh escaped her lips and she squeezed his hand before slipping into a deeper slumber.

“With you, nothing is impossible.” Careful not to bump his broken collarbone, Sam leaned closer and murmured, inches from her ear, “Brave and beautiful. Ready and willing to face pirates, spirits, and the horrors of the purgatories to end the family curse.” His heart hammered in his chest as memories of seeking treasure, falling in love, and losing it all flashed within his mind.

“I love you, Gretta. I’ll do everything in my power to earn your love.”

Tracing his fingers over the back of her hand, he touched the face of the ring’s oval red stone. He remembered every moment of their time together, while Gretta’s memories had been erased. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t prevent his thoughts from wandering. Concern prickled his skin as he recalled their quest to understand the ring’s curses.

The most dangerous one, a curse of bad luck, remained a mystery.

He inhaled and pushed his failures away. “Katarina told me to keep my distance from you because of potential tragedy. Nothing will keep me away. I vow to protect and love you forever.”

Gretta’s grip on his fingers tightened. With her hand remaining in his, he brushed a stray lock of hair off her cheek. She released his fingers and nuzzled into his palm with a tiny sigh. He closed his eyes, content to be back in his own body and time with her.

Yet uneasiness crept deep within and the dreadful feeling of impending tragedy grew stronger with every passing minute.

I would like to introduce the lovely, L D Rose Author of Release the Demons

Welcome L.D. Rose to my blog, The Authors Blog!
Thanks so much for having me, Tracey!

LD Rose Headshot

L.D. Rose is a neurotic physician by day, crazed writer by night, and all around wannabe superhero. She writes paranormal romance and urban fantasy, but she’s been known to delve into horror, sci-fi, and medical suspense on occasion. L.D. Rose is a member of the RWA, FF&P, NEC-RWA and CoLoNY. She currently lives in Rhode Island with her studly hubby, her hyperactive boxer, and her two devious cats.

L D, what is the inspiration behind your book?

This entire series has been in my head for a very long time! I used to participate in roleplaying games in high school and college (yep, total geekery) and I created character profiles all the time. My six boys for the Order of the Senary popped up in a slightly different manner then, but the overall gist was the same—six genetically engineered half-vampire mercenaries created by the U.S. military to take out vampires in a pseudo-post apocalyptic NYC. Each of these fellas has their own superpower(s) due the dramatic side effects of species hybridization with both physical and mental manifestations. I love stories with some element of romance in them so I had to hook each of these boys up with a special lady, and my muse pretty much took off with the idea and ran with it.

What will readers love most about your characters?

Blaze is a dark, tortured hero who’s still recovering from a horrific past incident. Although he puts on a hard exterior and gives off a “bad boy” vibe, he’s truly a good man and will do whatever it takes to protect those he cares for. Valerie is a tough chick who takes no shit, but she too is vulnerable and tries to hide behind her sarcasm and wit. Trying to get these two past each other’s walls was the best part about writing them.

Do you have a favourite moment or scene from your book, that you would like to

share with us?

Just for context’s sake, the hero sees in infrared and can’t feel his hands from nerve damage due to repetitive burn injuries. All in all, this makes shaving difficult.

“How long have you been clean?”

“Two years.” He finally scraped up enough courage to look at her. She’d scooted closer, her eyes piercing his soul and leaving a mark. “I’m still trying to put myself back together and it’s been harder lately.” He swallowed hard, feeling extraordinarily vulnerable. “But you’ve made it easier.”

Valerie smiled, one of those gorgeous, heart-stopping smiles that had lured him in the first place.

Shaving cream dripped onto Blaze’s forearm and he lifted a hand to his face, trying to catch it. “I’m making a mess.”

“Come here.” She pulled him toward her and picked up the razor he’d dropped in the sink. He settled between her legs as she reapplied the shaving cream, smoothing a hand over his skin. He sighed as he closed his eyes, reveling in the sensation as her warmth filled his heart to the brim. She carefully finished what he’d started, and it was in that moment when he realized he was madly in love with her.

“No one’s ever done this for me before,” Blaze said a bit hoarsely, covering her knees with his hands.

“I used to do it for my dad when he couldn’t anymore.” Valerie leaned over and rinsed the razor before setting it down. “But he had a lot more hair than you,” she added with a chuckle, handing him a towel.

He wiped his face and murmured, “Thank you.”

She trailed a finger along the line of his jaw. “You’re welcome.”

Blaze dropped the towel before he framed her face in his hands and kissed her deeply, pouring all of his emotion into it. She returned it with the same fervor as she wrapped herself around him.

Even after everything he’d told her.

After everything he’d done.

I love this segment (the entire scene really) because my hero, Blaze, finally shows my heroine, Valerie, that he’s vulnerable and human and not some enraged monster hell-bent on revenge (of course, he’s that too). What makes it special is that he finally realizes how much he loves her and how much she means to him, although he doesn’t tell her quite yet. 😉

What words best describe your book?

Dark, superhero, and vampire. 😉

Do you have any upcoming events that you would like to share with readers?

I’m constantly guest blogging on various sites and I’ll be at a Virtual Fantasy Con on Facebook in November (specifically Nov 2nd, link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1042477232432225/.

I also have a review tour with Reading Addictions (https://sites.google.com/a/myaddictionisreading.com/fall-2015-tours/l-d-rose) and I’ll be running giveaways then.

RELEASING THE DEMONS2_505x825 (2)

Hell-bent on revenge, Blaze is out to set the world on fire, and Valerie is the only one who can tame him. Will she pull him back from the brink or fall headlong into his dark past?

Here is a bit about the book to wet your appetite.

Blaze Knight has been through hell and back, but the nightmares aren’t over yet.

Five years after Blaze was maimed by Cyrus Chimola, a powerful vampire with a penchant for torture, he’s still trying to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. As a genetically engineered mercenary with the ability to bend fire to his will and to see in infrared, Blaze’s mission is to protect what’s left of humanity. When Chimola and his crew return to the Bronx gunning for Blaze’s blood, Blaze is forced to face the demons of his past. Hell-bent on revenge, he seeks the help of Valerie Medeiros, an NYPD detective who manages to steal his heart and save his life in more ways than one.

Motivated by her sister’s gruesome death, Valerie has made it her life’s goal to bury every vampire in the ground where they belong. When she brings in Blaze Knight for suspected murder, she discovers he’s not only innocent, he isn’t a man at all—he’s a half-vampire hybrid working with a band of brothers for the U.S. military. Valerie has a hard time trusting anything with fangs, yet she quickly falls headlong into Blaze’s life, a life full of darkness and horror she can’t even begin to fathom. The bodies are stacking up, but Valerie can’t seem to let go of this hybrid, a beautiful monster filled with pain, rage, and passion unlike anything she’s ever known.

In a world where the line between good and evil is blurred, Blaze and Valerie will find danger at every turn, risking everything they’ve come to know and love, including one another.

For those of you that would like to read a little more. Here is a taster of what to expect.

Valerie kept her eyes locked on the glass windows covered with cigarette prices and beer ads, watching Tattoos pay up at the cash register. Once she reached the side of the building, she pressed her back against the warm brick wall. Sweat trickled down her spine and she wiped her clammy hands on her jeans before she drew her Beretta. She listened for the bell hanging above the store entrance, and when it jingled, she peered past the corner of the building.

There he is.

Holding a pack of Marlboros, he slipped it into his back pocket along with a silver money clip. He walked back toward the Chevelle, scanning the area one more time as he stepped off the concrete elevation.

This is it. Do it. Now!

With her gun pointed at the ground in a two-handed grip, Valerie pushed off the wall and turned the corner, staring at his back. Her voice was loud and clear as she called, “Blaze.”

He stopped and pivoted around. A fleeting expression of confusion filled his face, but it quickly turned into shock as she lifted her gun and shouted, “Freeze, NYPD!”

Gasps and shouts resounded as everyone turned their attention on her. Some people ducked while others gawked, and she wished they would just climb into their cars and get the hell out of here. She did her best to ignore them, keeping her focus solely on the man before her as she carefully approached him. He didn’t make any sudden movements, his brow furrowing as a muscle in his jaw ticked.

Valerie flashed her badge to prove she wasn’t bullshitting. “Get your hands in the air where I can see them.”

He slowly lifted his arms and spread his hands out wide. Then spoke with a voice like black gravel, matching his appearance all too well. “What’s going on here?”

She closed in on him, his presence becoming more and more overwhelming. Sirens resonated in the distance, sending a trickle of relief through her. He didn’t appear armed but that didn’t mean jack.

“Turn around and get down on the ground. Now!”

Anger consumed the confusion on his face but he surprisingly complied, giving her his back again before dropping to his knees with his hands above his head.

She kept her gun aimed and her mind submerged in the well of her calm. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d arrested someone; she usually shot to kill. “Cross your ankles,” she ordered, and he did so, crossing his booted ankles as if he’d done this before.

Valerie placed her foot in the space between his legs, so if he attempted to stand he would end up flat on his face. People finally backed away as she removed her tungsten carbide handcuffs from her utility belt, gripping the Beretta with knuckles white as chalk. Tungsten carbide was the only metal strong enough to hold a vampire, but she used it on everyone, regardless of species. Two New Rochelle cruisers whipped into the gas station, blocking off both exits before four officers leapt out of their respective vehicles. Valerie put the gun up and cuffed Blaze’s dominant hand, swinging his right arm around before latching onto the left.

He didn’t put up a fight. He didn’t even flinch. But he balled his big hands into fists at his back. She read him his Miranda rights as she cinched the cuffs around both of his thick wrists.

“You have the right to remain silent—”

“I have the right to know what’s going on,” he growled, showing her his savage profile.

“Anything you do or say can be used against you in a court of law.”

“What are you arresting me for?”

“You have the right to an attorney.”

“Fuck the attorney—”

She yanked the chain of his cuffs, bringing his solid body against her as the faint scent of cologne tickled her nose. She leaned into his ear, anger flashing through her as she thought of bloody grass and charred flesh.

“You’re under arrest for the murder of Elena Delgado. Now get the fuck up and move.”
